Would it be possible that friends' messages had a symbol or something beside them to distinguish them from other messages?

Shouldn't their usernames be a bit of a hint?

TBH there are so many things more significant, like storing a decent number of old messages, that i would hope this wouldn't get prioritised, as nice a tweak as it might be.

Oh, there's also the slight point where this is already the case. Friends messages get a potato smiley face next to them.

There should be a smiley face icon next to your friends messages . It's not that apparent tbh.
