Not so sure this is a good idea! Another site - not naming names but they're now advertising on national tv (and good choice on the girl!!!) - had this on their mobile site a few years back and soon pulled it. As it's based on gps - and I know there's an opt out facility - all it takes is for you to opt in for a short while, and forget to then opt back out - and every member with the mobile log in can pretty much pinpoint your doorstep.

I can understand the benefit for those 'travellers' such as myself who may want to say a polite 'hi' and let them know I'm in their location - but see this more as a simple way for morons to abuse the site to try and 'out' locals - which surely can't be a good thing?

Any thoughts?

We agree that privacy is important. We don't want people tracking us down to our North London hideout either and knocking on our door so it's as important for us as for any other member.

The privacy options will be obvious (and opt-in), the GPS will only work while you're actively using the site and exact locations won't be shown (no maps, just bands of location e.g. "within 5 miles"). We'll have more details closer to launch.

Not good, don't think anyone should have the right to publish anthers location, not even roughly. Besides even an opt in method would mean the servers track all users, but only work for those who opt in. Unless of course someone hacks the server, which will have ALL the gps info right down to the 10mtr level!

Another point, what if someone doesn't turn the option off and they're at or near a school or similar? Wouldn't that be a little too much info?

What if people use it for tracking/stalking members for blackmail or worse?

I think some peeps presume that it'll help you find the Fab members in your local supermarket!!

We think it's a good idea and have heard of it working well on other sites.

Plus your phone doesn't just send gps location constantly to an app, will only be when running that app and opting in so you will have to be aware of it being active.

This is incorrect. Unless you opt in your location won't be sent to Fab's servers from your phone.

There are "overlay" gps utilities available. GPS software may display whatever is required, i.e.. it can show your position but only within a postcode. However the signal received by your servers will contain the entire GPS information package, all auger needs to do is overlay another GPS package, and it should be able to read the information that your display filters out. This has been done before, and reported on the web, so please don't assume I'm just blowing hot air. This information can be confirmed. As to the opt in, some GPS software will track any signal attached to a logged in device but will only display information if i has been given clearance, however the information is still received by the server. Other GPS packages don't, it depends what you are using. There have been several court cases and other proceedings, worldwide concerning websites using GPS tracking. Again, searching on Google can confirm this.

In case anyone is confused, just to repeat how our system will work: If you don't opt in, your GPS data won't be sent/collected/accessed
