Pic Pagination?

Aside from attempting to keep pages loading smoothly, is there a reason pagination is present for pages with 35 or so pictures, but doesn’t seem to be an issue with videos?

Is this to do with the video thumbnails being hosted elsewhere and just “linked” into the page and the pictures themselves are embedded into the page itself which might cause slowdown for trying to launch that many? Or this just a holdover from years ago when the internet was bad and it would have crippled page load times?
