A VPN is a way to tunnel your internet traffic trough a different network. The paid vpns allow you to select where in the world you want the traffic to the internet to appear. So if it’s a USA tunnel then this allows you to watch content that would usually only be accessible if you lived in USA.

It’s also encrypted so usual internet traffic would be obfuscated from your internet provider. This allows you to access sites that your internet provider may block. Also, as it’s encrypted it means your internet provider can’t easily snoop on your traffic.

The down sides would be there is a cost. it also means your internet speed would be slower. The vpn software would need to be set up on each computer you want to use it on and you would also need to trust that the company you use isn’t snooping on your traffic for any gain.

I use one in France so I can watch U.K. television programmes while I am there.

(I do have a tv license in U.K.)

Chose one of the established, well known ones and you shouldn’t have any problems. Many of them offer a 1 month free trial.

I used to have a 2 euro a month contract with free and it was ok. However signals in France can differ from area and day so check which company has best signal. I am lucky as we have fibre where I am so have Orange fibre for €25 per month. Often cheap offers on mobiles mean they only include calls within France and not much internet - if you want to use them for WhatsApp calls you may have to pay a little more.

I am using MyExpatVPN and have been pleased with it - you can just use it a month at a time. Many people who only want short term internet get a dongle that you can load up with internet time, may work out cheaper.

We are going to be there for 6 months fingers crossed on our visa.

We found that quite a few french people cannot phone a UK telephone number hence the Free option as well as the VPN.

Yes you do need a French number for deliveries or any official calls - you often have to put your number for online purchases and they don’t accept U.K. numbers.

Good luck with your visa x

My Expat Network VPN - I watch BBC,ITV,Channel 4 and Channel 5 on it. I choose the U.K. Stealth Mode connection. You have to connect on to it each time before you connect the tv channel and then it masks your connection as being in U.K. until you close.

So websites visited (such as this site) would be obfuscated from your ISP if connected via VPN…is the same true for uploading pics, such as our prof pics?

free vpn's, especially those that are part of a browser, will usually log all the data that transits through them which pretty much defeats the object of using a vpn. they are probably filling your cache with tracking cookies too as most browsers apart from say duckduckgo etc will want your traffic logs so they can make money from your habbits by selling your browsing info. i would suggest using duckduckgo in firefox (using various anti tracking addons)and then using nordvpn which will tunnel all the traffic from your device not just the browser. you can install nordvpn on your router so all devices using that router will benefit from it's tunneling abilities. but feel free to do your own research for what suits you best.

Your isp can’t see the content you’re uploading anyway as long as the website is https and as long as they’re not doing a Mitm attach in order to stop you viewing adult sites but yes a vpn gives you another layer of security on top.

A VPN is traditionally used by companies to allow their staff to access company internal resources when they’re out of the office however they can also be used to appear to be in another country or bypass porn filters.

It can be difficult to choose as others have said, some sell on or snoop regardless. Good to get recommendations from actual users.

Just an idea (I had a red wine or 3)

Free vpn for all Russians

Would that get past news blockages so they could see what's really happening.

That could stop the war

Or am I too deep on this,

It depends what you want it for. If you want complete anonymity like you might for going on the deep web. Install tor browser on your laptop or phone and ghost vpn which is around £4 a month. Don't trust a free one and tor only works with certain vpn's

we use a paid vpn have for the last 4 years best thing we did internet wise and does not slow down ours at all ...

some web site like fab get you to use a code with sign in to prove not a bot ... thinks like banking is best left to normal interet as it throws up security concerns ( like thinking you cards been nixked)
