Mobile near me: Official launch thread

We've gone live with mobile near me. It is OPT IN on this site so by default you do not share your mobile location with the site.

It's up to you to turn on and give it a try.

You can turn it off anytime.

Privacy is respected and no exact locations or maps will ever be shown, just approximate distances e.g. 0-5 miles, 5-15 miles etc.

You may have seen weird results for the first few minutes as we corrected a few things, but it should be fairly accurate from now one.

Any feedback welcome in this thread.

On your blackberry, when you goto the page where you select whether the feature is on or off (tap "Mobile Who's Near ON") what does it say at the very bottom of page?

"Same here I have a HTC

Click the settings button (three horizontal lines at bottom of phone) when you're in internet (browser) tab. Click "more" tab. Click "website settings". Goto the "m.fabswingers.com" listing and tap the "clear location access".

You may need to come out of internet/browser and start again.

Does that work?

I know privacy is paramount on the who's near me search but it's still a bit random. Glasgow isn't very big and having 0-5 miles is showing me people who live way across the other end of the city and isn't telling me who's actually close by. I want inches, feet and yards!

It's absolutely ridiculous that you have to pay to see more than 10 people.

How many single ladies compared to guys pay to be a site supporter? Hardly any because the ratio of ladies to single men is so low.

That means that men will be able to find us but not the other way around as we can only see the first 10, ensuing in another method for women to get bombarded, something none of us relish.

If you really care about encouraging more single ladies to be active on the site (which would in turn enhance your single male retention rate and therefore revenue) I would suggest making the location service free to this demographic.

I also disagree with having to have your location available publicly in order to use the service. Again, I would hazard an intelligent guess that many single women would be more inclined to use it i.e. search for men close by without being bombarded by unsuitable gentlemen if they could keep their location private.

I welcome this as a great addition to your site but hope you take my points seriously and welcome your feedback.

Have you switched on your handset/network web provider locations. Ie for iPhone this is safari. You will find this in your mobile settings. I don't know my way around a blackberry hand set so cannot help any further

Not meant to be criticism just constructive feedback, in its current form mobile near me is no better then the search function that is already available.

On your point about Privacy and Function...

Privacy, if someone really wanted to find you its just as easy with it set at 5 miles, as it is at 1,2,3,4 or even 10, 20, 30. As was mentioned in an earlier thread about triangulation...

Function, surely the point is, you turn it on if you want to be found? Maybe what you need is it set to turn off when you log out or after a certain amount of time. Thus preserving privacy and allowing people to be found when they want. I imagine that most people would want to use this function on a night out in order to find like minded people in the same club, holiday venue etc.

Perhaps another option would be to allow people to select the distance that they would like to be found within?

Go to whose nearby and switch it on on your handset. If safari didn't show up to switch it on you should get a few messages asking if safari can use you location.

Now its live, im not sure how triangulation could help to find someone in reality.

A mobile phone can be traced by the networks (or police with help from the networks) from cell tower triangulation but would need at least three cell towers to give a accurate(ish) location.

So, a user would need 3 handsets, all with the app, with a known fixed location and some clever software to find another using the app.

Least, thats my take on it.

Anyhoo…. have tried the feature on HTC One X and works great as does Jo's Iphone 4s (once I had enabled location services in Safari).

And now we have switched it off, lol

Good feature but only good when large numbers of people use it

A very good addition would be to have a map with people locations on, that would be even more impressive

Good addition though

Cheers admin

For iPhones go to settings, general, permissions and then allow safari to find locations. You'll then get the pop up prompt for fab's (once you log back into fab's) and you are up and running!

Agree with many filter comments, why would I want to see cock shots of men near me when I specifically filter them out when searching normally!

works fine on galaxy s2. needs a filter for m/f/couples etc. needs a FAQ unless I've missed it somewhere.

also is it based on current location or registered location.

nice app.

Using a galaxy s2 it seems to work.

Just one snag, when it shows who is near, it shows newcastle, plymouth, london, scotland and hull.

Now correct me if im wrong.....

Mark,

A great app idea. But been through the whole thread and played with it all day yesterday. I have a BB Bold and definatly having issues with the locations supposedly near to me.

I also will be happy when the filters kick in, but for now glasgow isn't close nor is wirral and colchester.

Any

Who's near - Surely no need for programming a whole new function, just add "GPS" to the location field in the regular search page ???????

That's how it works on eg plenty of fish, easy peasy. …

Do you realise this is showing where people are now, based on their mobile phone location (usually, GPS)? The person who has put "glasgow" as their home town, is just down the road from you - at this moment.

It would be useful if, when people are not signed in on the site, that they are removed from the list until they log in again.

No point on seeing who is nearby if they are not logged in and looking!

Filters will come in handy too once they are enabled.

Works great on Galaxy S3 and chrome.

I have sympathy with ladies and couples being pestered by local males. I don't think most guys appreciate it. Until it is filtered may I suggest that the ladies and couples affected in this way place a status update to say "only browsing - not seeking emails. Any will be deleted unread" or words to that effect.

Filters, would be good as no disrespect to any individual but were not looming for males, but that is what the majority is.... So a filter as to what our preference is would be an idea...

Love it but be even better if you could filter it and if the ranges closer could be improved, how good would it be if you got within 100m on a shopping complex or a camp site (we like camping) xxx

Works great.

Needs filter by who's on line now and distance - no point having the functionality if the person is no longer on line or too far away to meet!

Also would be could to see their preference summary for meets - e.g. M, F, FF, MM, TG, etc. saves a lot of time opening up a profile and finding they aren't looking for my type.

Overall a great addition!

Doesn't seem to work on my galaxy s2.

It did when I first tried, but since then, nothing.

I have tried what has been suggested on here and followed the instructions by the site.

Any other ideas of what is wrong?

I get the 'can't find your location' message, yet all the settings seem correct for the application to work.

Go to the home page on the mobile version. You'll see a new bar under where links to Home, Updates, etc.. Click the left side of Near Me bar then select Turn Off..

That bar on the home page lets you know if yr settings are On or Off

I would like to thank the Admin for their time, effort and consideration with the "Near me" feature.

Although I won't be using it, I can see that there are other people who generally like the information it gives them and the positivity they are giving.

up for making it an "opt in" and listening to the concerns of the people you provide a wonderful site too

Can we have a party meet button on mobile finder so of we want a spontaniouse meet with members we can tick it and give exact location like pub meets. This could make it fun. X

Or the ability to actually chose how accurate your location is... feet, yards, miles etc. That way everyone is happy, those who want to have the ability for people to see exactly where they are, and those who want a bit more privacy and mystery about their location...

Works well on HTC tried it round the country today. Got results.

Any body who is not sure about the phone finding their location, go into your mapping program. If that can find where you are you are ready to go.
