I have done this before and been very successful. I get a suite on a hotel with a fridge and it’s a bring your own party. Work best midweek so it doesn’t clash with club events

We had our Barnstaple social event in a private room in the local Lib Dem’s club. Pool tables, dart boards and a bar.

Better than a hotel room where everyone has to sneak past the receptionist

Good advertising means more people attend too

Largely depends on what you want from the social. Just a social or a play social. The hotel I use is very discreet and I issue instructions for access to avoid contact with reception. I have also booked a holiday cottage away from prying eyes too. Only thing with this is the number of cars and car parking can be tight.

I'm thinking your idea of social differs from what the op intends, as in purely a social get together!
