Realistically how difficult is it to learn to play, not expertly as that must take years but enough so you could play something that's recognisable and not just a racket

Thinking of trying but not sure if it's doable using YouTube videos etc

Any tips on what guitar to get(normal not electric)

My problem is getting it tuned in properly

I've got an electric tuner. They're really cheap

Get an acoustic guitar made by a reputable company. You get what you pay for.

You could learn 5-6 chords and to change between them reasonably quickly and with those you could play a fair few songs.

Be prepared for the tips of your fingers to be sore and don’t give up. There will be times when you don’t think you’re getting anywhere but stick with it.

Get a clip-on tuner, they are pretty cheap (like under a tenner) and very reliable!

Usually someone else does it for me but not anymore

For most people it’s hard, and takes a long time, to make a single sound takes coordination of both left and right hands and direct connection to the actual thing making the sound - unless a pick is used. No other instrument has this challenge.

What kind of music do you want to play ? Classical , folk, rock etc - melody or rhythm - all very different instruments and methods of learning

An ex taught himself and found it easy and he tried to teach me but i couldn't get my fingers round the frets very well so i found it hard and gave up. Also i don't know how to read the music.

Hubby plays ukulele.. The four major chords can be self taught in about an hour.. Its smaller than a guitar, easier to carry about and for the most part cheaper (like 15 quid) YouTube axis of awesome four chord songs or ukulele 4 chord songs..

Between Scylla and Charybdis

Get a red guitar, learn three chords and go forth and tell the truth

I found guitar much easier to learn the basics of than drums.

You could learn four chords in a day and become “that guy” who only knows wonderwall

Honestly, I'd say start with an electric. As a general rule (general...!) the action is a little lower, and the neck is a bit slimmer and narrower, so a bit easier on the pinkies. Telecaster will suit you well.

That said, I almost never go near my electrics these day and prefer my acoustic. Been playing 30 years

I gave my friend a guitar 6 weeks ago, she's just about got her first song nailed now.

Once you get past that bit where your fingers stop burning, it goes pretty quick

Yep. You need to develop callus on your fingertips

And after 50 years you'll have hands like Keith Richards

Well, you got plenty of time mate!! Get yourself a semi acoustic. And a, beginners chord book.. Once you learn a few chords, you can play about. Bar chords are good to learn to start as well.
