Hello. Well I learnt about Zoom this week. I’ve used it for work and even did a Zoom yoga class this morning.

Who else has discovered Zoom this week?

You can use via the website or app. Zoom gives you a personal meeting code which you can give to others and then you can all join in together. You get 40 minutes with 3 or more people for free. It's really easy and doesn't have many issues with lagging.

Yep. Used it to rehearse with a band mate, but mostly messing to see what it’s limitations are. More rehearsing today as well as a family video chat. Tonight a virtual 60th birthday party here my mate and I are going to sing and play at it. Next week start in earnest developing its use for my work.

Our son needs a tool to virtually rehearse with his bandmates. Would you recommend Zoom then?

I’m very surprised you said rehearsing with a band mate. I’ve tried to do musical stuff. The lag makes it impossible.

No it doesn’t work. Two much lag. Everyone will be playing at different times.

This was my question re: band rehearsal. My son said the same about lag on Microsoft Teams when they tried to jam through that.

Yep we’ve tried everything to overcome it and reduced the lag slightly but didn’t get to the point it was workable. So we are now going to recording tracks and then mixing them and putting together videos. We have all, the kit we need and my son is a music producer. So we’re going to try a different approach. We are also going to record backing tracks and put them on YouTube then play together to the backing track instead of trying to base it on one and other. There is some software called Watch2gether that synchronises your ability to play live together. We won’t be able to hear each other while we stream but we can watch ourselves. By recording the show we can hear what it sounds like. We’re playing with it. We’ll just sing along to each other tonight. Sadly will have to mute the others while I play but it works with only one playing at a time. We are learning.....

WebEx has been dreadful. Audio failures happening frequently. Teams has been working well, albeit not as well as Zoom.

Not yet. I’m still experimenting. I’m researching the possibilities and I’ll keep you posted on what works and what doesn’t.

Thanks for this, feel free to PM if easier. Our son is also a producer as well as guitarist so I'm sure he can work whatever techno work around is fathomed! He's meant to be finishing his BTEC first though

On my laptop I had to tick a box to say access my audio. It then worked. That was loading on it from a downloaded file rather than the internet page

"Educate me.....!! What is ZOOM ???"

Its an online tool for video conferencing and meetings, plus a zillion other workplace functions too, like file sharing, team channels for messaging etc. It's easy to set up and use online or you can download it as an app.
