Do you find it rude when

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

...messaging and someone reads the message then takes a while to reply?

I only ask this because if someone messages me and I want to give a proper reply I will normally take a while to reply. I’m simply not wanting to reply straight away and give a half arsed response, especially if I’m busy at the time and really a quick reply would be more of an acknowledgment of their message than a reciprocal reply.

I only thought recently people may see this as a lack of interest?

What do you all think??

So long as it’s not longer than 48 hours.

I mean there’s thinking of a response and then there’s taking the piss...

"Nope, I don’t find it rude at all, people reply when they can, not when I want

To be fair now I think about it, it’s often the guys who send the barrage of “???” messages however I have had a couple who sent some abuse back and called me a timewaster for not replying within about 20minutes. Well I thought fair enough guess it shows me that they’re not for me!!

I don’t think it’s rude at all.

I don’t usually read a message until I’ve got time to sit and reply.

It’s also different depending on whether I’m hoping to meet this person or not.

If it’s just a general chat then I wouldn’t mind when they get back to me.

I shall set 48 hours as the limit then I’ll be needing an app to remind me when to reply!! I say that as if I have floods of messages haha.

That’s a bit silly. 20 minutes isn’t exactly that much time.

Me too! Even with friends on whatsapp I’ll reply later and give them my full attention rather than a rapid “oh wow” or “thats sad” response which can come across as indifference.

Only teasing but there are guys on here who message you and then dissapear (after you’ve responded) and then reply weeks or months later like nothings happened. Now THAT is taking the piss, and the only acceptable excuse is that you’ve been ki*n*pped by aliens

I don’t find it rude. It’s the people that can’t be bothered to make proper conversation that irritates me. I’d much rather wait for a considered response.

It annoys me when men continually message ‘???’ Or say ‘you’re clearly not interested as you haven’t replied’ (within 20 mins).

I agree. It’s an interesting perspective. If it’s someone I was hoping to meet I’d definitely take my time. Especially as I write quite lengthy messages! I’m the same with reading them but sometimes if I’m excited to read the reply I’ll have to open it right there and then

I have once been guilty of this a long time ago. And only once! Don’t judge me!! It’s infuriating when that does happen. I like to talk most of the time so it’s also irksome when you’re having a proper chat and suddenly it cuts off. Like...what are your answers to my questions?? I was genuinely interested??

No, I don't find it rude in the slightest. I'd much rather people replied when they have headspace and energy to do so than giving a lacklustre, uninspiring response because they feel they need to rather than they want to. We all have lives away from here.

Lengthy messages are definitely a good thing. I like to really get to know people. I think the worst is “hey”. Unlike face to face conversing, there are no cues to pick up on and it seems like the effort is on you to check their profile and reply haha

No not at all, ww regularly have a quick read of a message when ww get a notification but don't have time to reply because of real life, so will reply later on when we have time. What annoys me is when we do this and come back to several messages questioning why we havnt immediately responded!
