Neighbour got Quoted 170 for a leaking replacement tap.

If this is the future then he should diy.

Should People be glad of getting work and keeping prices low or

Does that include the cost of a new tap?

I'm a plumber - a lot of people ask for like-for-like replacements and often don't realise just how expensive taps can be. Makes good business sense for the plumber to also offer cheaper alternatives though...some are just too lazy!

And the poor guy who made it sound so simple forgets there are taps with ceramic discs these days for one not just simple rubber seals..the seat for the valve may need cutting back to give a clean seal another small job but tools required etc.....not always a straight forward simple job...ive had pipe work so old its doubtful it would withstand being undone to allow a tap replacement...etc no wonder he left the site...

That's actually the going price. I am an electrician. And working as an employee for a company we earn between £180 to £200 a day gross. We don't have any expenses other than cost of travel.

Why would you want to replace your tap with a leaking one ??

As others have pointed out, a lot of factors here could easily push it up to and even beyond that quote. Keep on mind it can cost up to £50 just to have a leaky tap fixed.

Also, there are cowboy chancers out there too - it's a minefield.

I'd report any definite cowboys ripping people off - sorry for the awful slur against cowboys.

I need an IKEA tap fixed, due to a leak. It's now discontinued but would be cheaper to buy brand new, if quotes are £100 or more.

There are some good looking plumbers on here, so it's also possible to have some friendly flirting and getting holes filled properly

Changimg a tap can take a few minutes, or it can take a hours dismantling the surrounding cupboards, draining the tank, folding yourself into a position that would make a chiropractor cringe and a contortionist proud.

On top of all of this if you damage something you are liable to replace it at your cost. If you fit a cheap tap to save the customer some money and it starts leaking you will be changing it free of charge and have an unhappy customer to deal with. Worst case scenario the leak causes major damage.

This is all before you get to the cowboy customers that blame you for a scratch on their knackered 20 year old sink or claim their toilet isnt working since you changed the tap and expect you to fix it, for free of course.

There is also the time spent sourcing and collecting your replacement, time spent traveling, fuel, van, insurance, accountant, liability insurance, tools, sundries etc.

There is a lot of cost and liability to being a tradesman and running a business. There is also a lot of skill and time and money spent learning and becoming qualified. On the face of it changing a tap is a simple task but a tradesman has the experience to overcome and avoid the potential pitfalls. Lots can go wrong such as getting airlocks in the pipes, gatevalves breaking, seized on backnuts, wrong types of taps not suitable for your particular system, cheap foreign produced stuff with non standard fittings or not compliant with regulations. There is an element of paying for the experience of knowing these things alongside knowing what not to do. You aren't just paying for their time.

I know this is a long and boring post so i will stop there but i hope people can see why tradesmen charge what they do. Of course there will always be rip off merchants as well and there will always be the guy down the pub that will do it for £20 but a good tradesman is worth what they charge.
