been wondering for a while now. Why are our towns and villages 'twinned with' other far and beyond , villages and towns in deep dark lands. Are natives with spears wondering why there village is twinned with preston, or maidstone ? Who dicides this and why ? Does some overpaid half wit travel the plannet and on arrival , think "fuck me, this area of billabongawackpaka is just like burnley". Credit where credits due, it may have its similar housing not fit to keep ferrets in, but come on, blackpool has a replica eifle tower but you dont go to paris and see 'twinned with fylde ' do ya. Now these signs and all expenses paid trips to all these places (if thats what they do ) must cost tax payer. Even the signage. What are your views ? Ta.

I've only ever seen twinnings with cities/towns in France, Germany, Spain etc

The point is to allow two places with similar industries, of similar size and so on to enrich each other culturally through things like school exchanges and twinning associations. Depends on your view on this as to whether you think it is a good idea or not I guess.

Paris is twinned with Oakham in Rutland, I believe. The difficulty is telling them apart.

It seems like an excuse for local councillors to have subsidised holidays to me.

It started just after the war as a way of uniting Europe. Then developed as a trading/we have some industry in common link but has been tarnished by local authorities using it to have a jolly.

This thread reminded me of this article a coupla weeks ago.....

A new initiative has paired the Scottish hamlet of Dull with an American town named Boring.

The Dull and Boring plan was hatched after a resident of Dull, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, cycled through Boring in Oregon.

The Dull folk of Perthshire then contacted their Boring counterparts across the Atlantic with a view to striking up the partnership.

It may be dull and boring but the two towns are thrilled to be linking up

They have not been twinned, because Boring is far larger than Dull, but planning officials in the US town have sent a 'Declaration of Sistership'.

Community Councillor Marjorie Keddie told Sky News: "It's an amusing idea rather than a very serious idea.

"I can just imagine tourists coming up and suddenly seeing a sign, 'Dull Twinned With Boring.'

"It makes people smile and, in this economic climate, it's a good idea."

The Perthshire village of Dull has a population of around 84 people.

It grew around a monastery centuries ago and is home to the origins of St Andrew's University.

They say Dull is never boring so local estate agents call it "Dull by name but not by nature".

Meanwhile, Boring has its own catchphrase and prides itself on being "an exciting place to call home".
