Cat Stevens wrote the song in 1970. It was on his Tea For The Tillerman album but you’re right about PSB suing a personality. It was Jonathan King. Found this on Wickipedia.....

In 1987, Jonathan King accused Pet Shop Boys of plagiarising the melody of "Wild World" for their UK No. 1 single "It's a Sin". He made the claims in The Sun, for which he wrote a regular column during the 1980s. King also released his own cover version of "Wild World" as a single, using a similar musical arrangement to "It's a Sin", in an effort to demonstrate his claims. This single flopped, while Pet Shop Boys sued King, eventually winning out-of-court damages, which they donated to charity.

Eagles Hotel california.

At the time the band were touring with Jethro tull.. Listen to "when we were young" by tull... Very similar chord progression.. Which in its self isn't systematic of a "rip off".. But it makes you wonder if they at least were influenced by it

There’s a good documentary on iPlayer called ‘how pop songs work’ it’s a ok documentary but there’s a section on artists ‘paying homage’ and ripping off, well worth a watch if you’re not heading out anywhere

No, it kinda goes through lots of songs and looks at the techniques used to create them, not too heavy on the music theory either
