Are these always given as an option instead of 3 points?

I foolishly got caught few years back doing 36 in a 30 zone and Warwickshire police didn't give me the option of doing a course. My car insurance is crazily high and i'm sure the 3 points on my license wouldn't be doing it any help.

Also how long do points stay on my license for?

If a simple speeding offence, they will show on your licence for 4 years, but will only be active for 3 of them.

Some insurance companies are crafty though and ask you if you have had any points or convictions within the last 5 years.

As for the speed awareness courses, they are becoming more prevelant these days, but aren't always offered as an option.

They are not always given. Force needs to be member of camera safety partnership.

I did such a course in January and actually learnt a lot.

It did more to make me think about speed than points on my licence ever would.
