Foot and Mouth in 2001, the year I opened my tourist based business. And the the Iceland volcano (not going to try to spell it) when I was running an online mail order business and the postal situation became too unreliable.

There's always something!

When I was 12 the local water supply became seriously contaminated to the point where we weren't even allowed to brush our teeth with it, serious risk to health.

I remember that we made the recommended changes, which were annoying, and got on with our lives. (And one of the boys in my class drinking out of a hose and the teachers going ballistic )

This isn't the same, but I do wonder if our mindset has shifted along the way.

The closest I can compare this too are the bomb scares in London- first the IRA then the 1999 Nail Bombings.

Although this is much more widespread. I do think a lot of people are overreacting and panicking though.

When I was nursing was often on standby for anything that called for us to come into work. We were expected to stay in the hospital for as long as required.

We’d have additional training for crisis situations, as I worked on Medical Admissions and then respiratory would have training in working in masks etc, had to wear them during the Bird Flu outbreak. A mare as I get claustrophobic, but had to be done x

The BSE crisis in the 80s, which I strongly suspect is linked to the recent Brexit insanity.

How would remembering past epidemics/pandemics and general nasty stuff lift spirits!

I grew up on a very remote island. winters were often harsh

mum always baked, parents had large chest freezers full to the brim as we would get snowed in for weeks at a time

one year dads land rover defender went into a drift and the snow came up the windscreen. abandoned it & had to walk home

awesome times as we learnt to ski, we would fill black bags with snow then sit on it and use as a comfy sledge, would attempt to build igloo

would fish as we were literally 100 yards from the sea

as kids we absolutely loved it

We survived and we will again. Because we did.

Once a vaccine is found to work it'll never be an issue for most of us again.

But there will be another one along as people don't learn lessons. Still saw people this weekend walking out the toilets and not hand washing, grim

Odds are for most of us it'll be pretty mild, and herd immunity will help. The societal chaos in the meantime doesn't help.

But yes. I'm listening to virology podcasts at the moment. Every second or third sentence is "wash your hands!"

For me... It's not the same, but for months as a child our drinking water was dangerous, possibly deadly. This was before bottled water was a big thing. We all got through. We were ok.

This is bigger, no question. But most of us will get through this. Strength and solidarity.

Difference between then and now is that social media wasn't about( or wasn't as widely used) to help spread rumours, lies, fear, hysteria and the occasional (overlooked) fact.

Got it in one..the media fiends at play..sure keep up with what's going on but seriously...one of my normally savvy friends has become hooked. People say how violence, drug addiction etc etc is far worse than any other time..it's not it is just communicated more due to media and social media. Yes take stock of current situation and apply but don't get swallowed up in the hype being generated

In therror 70s people were having nuclear bunkers put in their gardens, many stockpiled cellars..adverts told you to listen for the nuclear alert signal and to hide under a bloody table...we also had the strike days...the unions got a bit keen so every man and his dog was striking so for half the week you d have water but no power so many long nights by candle light playing board games then the other half of the week you d have power but no water so you d go to the stand pipe at top of the street and thru many journeys fill your bath and pans and buckets..this went on for ages til union members started to tear up their memberships and return to work because their households were falling apart. At the end of the day follow the directives which as I understand it has not included stockpiling food etc..be smart and sensible. Every generation seems to think they ve had it worst..I don't believe so..it's just progress has made it more open on the media front.
