First corona vaccine tests went ahead yesterday

The first people were injected with a potential vaccine in the States yesterday.

I was told they were paid $4500 each to trial it, although I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.

It still could be awhile before it is mass produced should it work (over a year), but it is interesting that they have at least found a potential vaccine.

There are also drugs already in production that are being tested for treatment of the virus, as there is a strong belief they will help the more serious symptoms.

Not overly convinced with this whole thing. The only virus that's been eradicated on a global scale was small pox and that was due to a global vaccination program. The costs. Profits and the general monies that exchanged hands in governments. Pharmaceutical companies. Manufacturers and private contractors was mind blowing in those days standards. Now fast forward to modern day. The only way you can truly eradicate this is another global vaccination programme. assuming it doesn't mutate. Will have to watch this space

Yeah, certainly early days yet for the vaccine route out of this problem. Worryingly it has been suggested there may be other viruses floating about that could be come established....have to start all over again...!!

Yes, unfortunately it's extremely expensive to develop drugs, so the drug companies are only focusing on the ones they can make profits on.

This does not include (for example) anti-biotics. At least 3 of the big drug companies have said they are not researching these. So sod viruses, it'll be a scratch in the garden that gets infected that'll be killing us all soon.

Firstly it probably (almost certainly) will mutate. However a vaccine will still have some value.

At the moment the human immune system has no experience of this kind of Coronavirus at all.

While a vaccine for this one won't give full protection from a mutated version. It will give the immune system experience of fighting this kind of virus. A bit like a Flu jab does today.

The ironic timing hey. The HIV drug PReP to be made available on the nhs from April as a preventative drug and it could be eradicated in 20 years. It's all happening now.

I've heard (no evidence) that they've made a tweak to the swine flu virus and that's the trial.

Also heard monkeys in China that were infected early on made a full recovery and when re infected again, they built immunity to it and weren't ill.

They will have started research a couple of months ago. And this is only the very early trials of a possible vaccine. It's at the stage of "it might kill them stone dead, bung em a few thousand dollars and make em sign the disclaimer". It might give full, some or no protection. It might make them more ill than the virus. It might make them so that they catch the virus worse. So the different research teams need to test a bunch of different things all at the same time.

Even if they had the answer today, it then needs putting into mass production. Making enough flu shots each year to give to just a small part of the population, those at most risk, takes about six months.
