Manchester

We are planning to relocate later this year, our jobs are taking us to Leeds and Manchester, what we can't decide is where to make our home, we want to be in or near the city centre so a place between the two city's isn't an option. Which would you choose?

leeds, cheaper, but manchester more cosmopolitan.

depends what you are looking for, tbh.

just a house to be in then probably Leeds, but if you are looking for the whole package then Manchester would seem a better choice as it possibly offers more.

Have worked in both Leeds and Manchetsre in the past and I'd pick.........Liverpool, whoops thats my Scouse biaseness coming out again.

Seriously though, both cities are good in diffrent way, though I think theres more swinger clubs in or around Manchester so that might swing it for you....

The biggest problem I think you'll need to consider is commuting, assuming one or both of you will be driving. Even 10 years ago when i used to drive the M62 every day, the traffic coming from Yorkshire to Manchester in rush hour each day was really bad, taking upwards of 90 minutes to travel from Leeds to Manchester once you werer actually on the motorway. it was less congested on the Manchester to Leeds run.

It depends what you truely want but maybe consider living somewhere like Bury where there is the tram service into Manchester City Centre and you are close to the MWay to get to Leeds and close enough to Manchester to go out at night using either the tram or the usual of having a nominated driver.

Not really...anything from j24 Huddersfield way is a nightmare. Chain bars the worst junction on the whole m62. Just the m621 that makes it easier.

The op does have a nice arse though....so I'd say Leeds

Spot on but the run into Manchester is equally bad. Both Manchester and Leeds have crime issues and not the best schools wise unless you go to the expensive areas.

The true crux is what you can afford house wise. City centre is fine unless you are too scared to exit your front door.

Are you looking for city centre or outskirts? Leeds is nice but you are probably better taking the train to Manchester or up to a 2 hr car drive.

I am midway between both and getting to either for 9am by car is horrendous at times.

I would look at Huddersfield. Cheaper property prices, a mainline train station with regular connections to both cities, a major motorway within 10 mins drive of the town centre, a good selection of town centre shops, a very mixed population and some stunning houses within 5 mins walk of the town centre round Greenhead Park and Bradford Road.

Well there isn't much else to buy there !

Most of the shops on that retail park have been boarded up for months if not years.

Hopefully the park will be pulled down soon and re-developed as part of the re-gen of the Ancoats Basin.

I doubt you will find a clear winner from the forumites, each poster will have a bias mine is towards the city of leeds, I'd make your wish list see which city ticks most boxes I think you'll find they're very close,

both cities have had massive investment in recent times, giving city living, great eating , great night life, great retail therapy (for the ladies ) so many reasons for either , ,...

As with every major city there are areas in both that you wouldn't wish to be visiting or living in...

Does one of you prefer or will put up with the travel to work, (its the dark days of winter that drag when I'm travelling) , might be the final thing that swings it for you...

When I worked in Salford Quays, employed a conglomorate of people from having closed sites down in Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool and transferring some of the staff to Salford Quays.

One quiet Friday afternoon, we started a brain storming session about what was best between Liverpool and Manchester. So the Scouse contingent of which I was one pulled out things like The Beatles, The Best Georgian Architecture outside of London, 2 cathedrals etc, while the Manchester lot pulled out various things too like Universities and Speedway circuit and whatever. The Scousers pulled out the 2 football teams of Liverpool & Everton, with the Manchester lot countering with United and City (this was about 1991 or so). The whole thing ended in a bickering row as United's nomination was over ruled because they are actually in the City of Salford, not Manchetsre and there is no such thing as a Manchester Derby as a true derby requires 2 teams from the same city.

For the person who slagged Liverpool off, suggest you revist the place as it's a wonderful city with a fabulous city centre, great night life, a marvelous river with a magnificent World Heritage Site and only recently had a huge Street Art festival, plus the city is one of the most visited in the UK by tourists.

as for the OP, you'll have to make your own minds up me thinks, maybe you want to put a budget on your house price and then we'll all have an idea as to where you can and can't live. Mind you, there is a farm in the middle of the M62, now that would be convenient but you'd defo be out in the sticks

I'm from Manchester and love it with all my heart, but (apart from the football fans) Leeds is the nicer place to live in all honesty.

If you do choose Leeds, then Chapell Allerton is the best part of the city to live.

It's not far from the city centre, but has it's own (very good) bars, restaurants and shops.

Headingley is also nice, but is really a student area and the main drag is a little cramped in comparrison to Chapel A.

Didsbury is a cool area, but maybe wrong side of town for commutes to Leeds.

Prestwich and Worsley also spring to mind and both have easy access to the M62.

City centre wise, I would plump for Northern Quarter or Deansgate Locks, but you are looking at more 'apartment style' living in those areas.

If it's a house you want, you will have to look outside of the City Centre.

Longsight has always been seen locally as one of the more deprived areas of the city, pretty much along with anywhere within 2/3 miles of the city centre.

It has a large immigrant population (historically Irish and more recently, Pakistani / Bangladeshi), a large amount of students and yet no 'village heart' and doesn't feel as cosmpolitan as the areas with a similar demographic such as Rusholme and Fallowfield.

It has also not benefitted yet (as much) from the re-gen schemes in other areas close to the City such as Ancoats, Eastlands, Hulme and Ordsall / Salford Quays.

A move to Manchester will involve compromises, both area and property wise, unless someone has a considerable budget. It is no longer a cheap city to buy property in.

I forgot to mention Monton yesterday too. It is effectively a suburb of Salford as opposed to Manchester but still only 15 mins into the centre.

It has it's own small centre and has quite a 'buzzy' feel due to the high number of hospital staff in the area.

It also has property to suit most budgets. The Ellesmere Park part of Monton always seems such a nice place to live.

if one of you is planning to comute by road to leeds would recomend you live east of jn18 of the M60 as this is THE major bottleneck during rushhours .

so on this basis you could look at Alkrington Heywood Middleton all of which have good shopping etc in there own right only drawback is poor rail conactions also Moston Chadderton good rail conections with regular trains to both leeds and manc good bus conections and not too far out all the above have very good access to the M62 to travel east .if you want to go a bit further out you could try Saddleworth Mossley Stalybridge excelent rail connections with trains every 20 mins to leeds & 15 min train ride from city center pretty good access to the M62 a bit more counryfied being on the edge of the penines tho house prices can be expensive especialy Saddleworth

If you move to Huddersfield in preference to Leeds or Manchester, I can guarantee you will regret it.

I work there and there's a number of reasons I would discourage anyone from moving there.

Way more crime in relation to the population than either city.

The locals are generally quite beligerant (again, comparatively speaking), and there's fucking hills everywhere.

I nearly moved there a few years back, but the house fell through at the last minute.

I now thank my lucky stars it did and am glad I moved to Wakefield (despite it having almost no culture whatsoever).

Ah that's Easy.... You clearly will be moving to Liverpool then, as everyone knows Manchester is just a suberb of Liverpool.....and not the posh bit!!!!!

In truth depends how close to Manchester City Centre you want to live, for the commute to Leeds assuming your driving you'll need to be thinking Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Worsley, Swinton, if i was living near Manchester and could afford it, I'd look over towards Wilmslow, Alderley Edge & Hale, all very expensive though, outside of that lot I'd simply be guessing. I did like Worsley a lot though as it has some nice walks by the canal, some open spaces, is close to the city, it's only disadntage to me is it's kinda sandwiched between M62 and East Lancs Road, but that can be an advantage too.

believe me, you don't want to move to Swinton. And definietly not Oldham, which is pretty much the biggest shit hole in England.
