A NATIONAL CRISIS! As the government described it today now seems to be all consuming with wall to wall media coverage! Chief Scientific Advisor stated that up to 80% (worst case scenario)of the population may catch it with a 1 in a hundred death rate equates to approximately 5million additional deaths in the UK alone, over the next 6months

How much more worried are you now compared to a week ago?!? Will you be even more concerned in the future if the number of cases rises sharply! have you changed anything and made any preparations regarding the implications! Or do you still think that it is much ado about not much, and everything will be fine!!!!

More worried about possibly passing it onto vulnerable parent than myself or kids. But other than that I'm not ott about it have encouraged more hand washing and sanitizing, havent panic bought and dont plan to. If it happens it happens.

As a scientist I would say it is worse than flu, but it's not as scary as the media is making it to be. It seems to be deadly to elderly and those with severe illnesses. But for healthy people the severity can differ from mild to really bad like flu x

I am more worried about the possible months of no social life and the possibility of many weeks on sick pay, than the virus.

More than the virus, many men will loose their support networks, their friends their football clubs, rugby clubs etc. This socialisation keeps many peoples unknown support networks going. With this gone and the financial implications and the depression that the isolation will cause, I am worried about men I know and hope that this doesnt cause a furthering of the epidemic of male suicide.

No, what everybody should be concerned about is the absolute hell the NHS will go through and the knock on effects this will have on the rest of us.

Businesses will suffer and the economy will suffer. Anybody who thinks this will not effect them has a bit of a rude awakening coming I think.

I work in a district general hospital

This feels different to the previous virally panicky things over the last 5-10 years (SARS, MERS, H1N1 ‘flu’.....). The ease with which it’s spreading internationally, the case fatality rate - and the amount the senior staff (and Public Health England) are worried - all trouble me.

I’ve also been keeping an eye on comments from doctors in Italy: in essence, there’s only one diagnosis that people are coming to A&E with; only one appearance on chest X-rays / scans. The mortality is high, and that *might* be due to an older population, *but* they have 2-3 times more doctors and intensive care beds and they’re *still* running out of ventilators to keep patients (and their colleagues who are now patients....) alive.

I really hope I’m over-reacting, but yes, this has me worried. We may well need to move to schools closed, and no social gatherings, within the next few days.

**Please keep an eye on Public Health England announcements, and call NHS 111 if you feel unwell.**

I work In a big huge business district of Liverpool, most of hmrc is where I wor,I plus loads of council, nhs to name a few. . My company relays on them workers. If they are not working, we have no business.

I don't have any of the linked serious illness factors that can be exacerbated by the virus, with the exception of Diabetes (T 2).

But that's been under very good control for a few years.

I'm heeding the guidelines too about cleaning hands etc.

I daresay, it's about keeping aware of your daily life, your surroundings and those around you.

My only concern are those people of all ages who obviously had parents who never taught their kids to put their hands to their face when sneezing!

I am a carpenter I have a small brain with a poor education in light of this I am going to have to trust what my prime minister is telling me along with his top scientific advisors.

So with that in mind I check my the gov.uk website daily. I check my local authority website daily.

My job means I visit many schools and large public buildings on a daily basis which means I come into close ISH proximity with literally hundreds of people, I am also diabetic with high blood pressure, asthma and a heart condition so thank you for your advice but I'm going to listen to actual expert's rather than some stranger on the internet pretending that they know it all as they have read it on the internet!!

Btw a known source of very reliable and trustworthy information the internet right?

Obviously all the world's governments have been duped y a worldwide scam and all the nae sayers poo pooing coronavirus are far more educated and knowledgeable than some professor who has been studying infections diseases for years.

I'm concerned for the effect on economy. And the NHS. A lot of nurses have school aged children, if schools close how are they meant to work? I also believe that NHS staff should be offered regular testing. A number of my colleagues are currently ill but we are all in work. This self excluding thing from today that Boris has said it's just not suitable without testing our managers expect us in and they are not testing those that are doing the self excluding 7 day thing as boris said not to ring 111.

My worry is that the major hospital near me, struggles anyway and regularly has patients queuing in the corridors in A & E. Don’t see where patients who need hospital treatment will go, when the bed capacity is so dire already in this country.

The issue with the virus is that at triage in Emergency, the stretched medical system will have to start prioritising patients who are likely to survive over those who will die. Those likely to die is currently at age 50.

Hence it’s easier to just self - isolate and practice proper hygiene.

people who are 50 are not likely to die. For everyone of every age group the chance of dying is lower than the chance of survival.

If people stopped running round like headless chickens and going to GP surgeries and A&E with very minor symptoms, the strain on the NHS would reduce massively.

Follow the guidance given, only contact 111 if your symptoms are becoming concerning and self isolate if you have a fever and/or a new continuous cough.

Me not worried but twin brother just out of hospital a few weeks after getting a bad chest infection. And he's still not fully recovered. And still on antibiotics..

Are we worried?

I suppose now we have to say yes, a little.

Over the last few days/weeks we haven't really bothered so much.

However from now on we have to take it seriously.

In the short term we are wondering if we will be able to fly home a week on Monday. Flight cancellations and border closures are starting to ramp up and it is possible we could be stuck in Spain.

Long term it is looking likely that someone we know is going to get it, maybe even we will.

Although we are not seriously ill we have both had some health problems and we are both over 60 so that is a worry as well.

More relevant to this site is that we have now put our swinger life on hold. We did actually go to a club this week but that will be our last for some time. Hopefully not forever.

Most of my family and myself could be taken out by this and yes I would miss them terribly. However we've all got to go sometime and it's good for the human population as a whole. That which does not kill us and all that.

I totally agree with this. I’ve found in the UK British people tend to practice very poor hygiene.

- Men in bathrooms almost never wash or dry their hands after a piss

- People in shared workspaces openly cough at screens, with “debris” going on keyboards and mice

- not washing vegetables and fruit before eating it.

Yes, I think this is where the real damage will happen. Not today, or even this summer, but in the long term.

There is huge awareness of this virus, and people taking notice. Because the likelihood is it will effect us all in some way.

However, if the same awareness was there for societies real ills, and the same money invested, then the world would be a much better place.

Mental health, domestic abuse, any number of much more damaging issues get swept under the carpet. Both in terms of awareness and funding. Why?

Because we all think it won't happen to us, so we don't make a fuss as government money is reduced and services are cut.

A bit of panic, media hysteria, and the realisation it will affect "me" and the money appears. It's why anti-terrorist stuff gets cash thrown at it, when the actual risk is much lower to us all than, for example, suffering domestic abuse (yes even the blokes).

Maybe we should all get more vocal about the really dangerous pandemics out there...

She has a punctured lung from a recent vehicle accident and even normal flu could cause severe problems. Yesterday, I refused to take her to the store with me, so I had to live-stream nearly the entire stock so she could choose what she wanted

Personally I’m not worried. If I catch it, I catch it. I’m fit and healthy and not in the demographic where the mortality rate gets much higher. If I don’t catch it, I don’t catch it. *shrugs*

Touching your face is the worst thing isn't it?

Therefore, make everyone in the country dip their fingers in chopped chillies. Regularly, through the day.

It'll also discourage them from touching their balls I've just discovered...

I've not been too worried about the whole virus thing, but lately I'm more concerned how it's it's showing the selfish streak we all have.

Modern society is flawed as it constantly encourages competition and "look after number one" mentality. We are seeing people literally freak out and panic, the first thing they do is not say "let's beat this as an intellectual progressive society" nooo...It's let's stockpile?

If it gets a lot worse, that 'stuff' will run out, then what? Will we band together? Or start raiding people's homes and businesses.

As the world slowly shuts down county by county I admit I am worried -

As the shelves at the supermarkets empty I worry about how to feed my family

We are luckily in a position where we can word from home if need be

Yes the flu kill a lot of people and so does cancer etc etc ... but this new virus is in addition to that

As someone who suffers with asthma and so does my son I am concerned as there will not be a vaccine ready for the general public until at least next year

Like with most mid to low viruses, symptoms are varied from person to person. Generally symptoms caused by a virus are caused by the body immune system fighting the virus, not caused by the virus itself.

Some people will seem to have little more than a cold, some people will be stuck in bed with lack of energy, and some will have critical reactions and need medical assistance.
