Retrieving porn from a dead computer

I am in the unfortunate situation of owning two PC’s and a laptop that no longer function and have some bloody good homemade porn trapped in them. I’m not very technical but I installed the memory and sound card in one of the PC’s myself and feel with a bit (or perhaps a lot) of advice I’m probably capable of getting my porn back. I don’t currently have a teckie friend to turn to for help and advice but if there is anyone out there who feels they could offer me some online hardware support I would be eternally grateful .

Thanks,

Heaven xXx

You can take the hard drive out and fit it in s "host drive" not sure of the correct name and then you can access it - may need to download some software to do it

Provided that the hard drive is still ok, it's a simple matter removing it from the dead pc and reading it elswhere then copying your stuff over

you can get USB to 'whatever flavour' hard disk adaptors too so you can just plug it in and play. These are pretty useful as you can then use the drives as a backup volume and stick it in a box somewhere in case your main drive goes down...

Wolf

ps. as long as it ain't the drive that's brought the machine down in the first place.... expect blue smoke if that's happened. Best take the drive out and power it up on a working desktop without any data leads attached just to make sure it spins up!

You could remove the hard drive from your non-working PC and you can "piggy back" the old hard disk drive onto a working PC.

:- Open up your (Non-working) computer and remove the hard drive, go to another (Working) PC and open it, see if there is an empty spot on the cable in there where you can attach this drive. If so, connect it and reboot pc, it may appear as D: or E: when you open "my computer". Then navigate your way to porn stash and copy files/folder over.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the response, I’m pretty sure it’s power supply issues with all three machines. I have a (just) working PC so will try connecting the PC hard drives to that. Any advice on what to do with the laptop? The battery went years ago then the internal battery went and every time I unplugged it I had to reset the date and time, then one morning it refused to boot up. For some reason I am convinced the power supply is no longer delivering enough juice. Should I just try buying a new power cable for it or am I jumping to conclusions?

If the battery has gone faulty it could be drawing too much current from the power supply unit in an atempt to charge itself up.

Take the battery out and see if the machine will run with just the psu connected.

If it still doesn't fire up and you suspect the psu is faulty, the only way to know for sure is by substitution with a known good unit (or if you have someone with the test gear to check it's output)

It hasn't had the battery attached for at least the last three years, that was the first thing to go wrong with it Would it just be a case of putting a volt meter on the psu? I think I know someone I can borrow one off.

The CMOS battery is just a watch style battery (The flat ones about the size and shape of a penny) will cost next to nothing to replace.

A friend gave me a battery so really I have no excuses but I have been dreading trying to install it. I'm a bit frightened of opening my laptop.

Fair play, desktops are a bit more accessible, I can't say i've ever opened my laptop up, not sure i'd be confident enough getting it all back together again either

Sounds like a simple copy/paste job to me.

Should be pretty straight forward if you have a usb.

Yeah you could certainly do that, at least you'll be able to check the off load output voltage of the psu and that'll give you half an idea if it's working or not. It is however worth bearing in mind that you are only checking the voltage of the psu without any load. If the supply isn't regulating correctly the voltage could change when loaded .. but it will certainly give you an indication if it's working or not ..

you know you can Google an actual step by step guide to opening pretty much any make/model pc or laptop. But just make sure before you start to read thru the full instructions to make sure its the right one. Also what i do is put screws for various on labeled paper so i dont lose any. Depending how old your laptop is you could buy a New main battery. Just dont bother buying ebay or other named brand batteries as they'll only last 6 Months or so before dying.

If the reader arm on the hard drive is broken (like on one of my old ones), then you are pretty much screwed (no pun intended!)

The best bet is a USB to devour sata dependent on the age of the machine and drive type , if you do put the drive into another pc and it's an IDE drive ( big multipoint connector about three man inches long) then you will need to move the links on the back to make it a slave drive or once connected your pc will not reboot ...

If a USB drive works you can download a program called GHOST which will copy all required info to the other drive .. Then buy a USB memory stick and make a further copy for safekeeping

Awwwwwwww to begin with this all sounded so easy and now it's started sounding all hard. I deserve to be beaten round the head with a compaq 386 though as I have an external hard drive which I didn't back the movies up to. And now I've found somewhere I can watch my own porn on a cinema screen and I don't have the original HD footage, oh woe is me!
