Are Fray Bentos pies overrated? It's a right pain in the arse to open the tins.

I prefer a Pukka Pie.

There are three types of pie:-

A filled pie (also single-crust or bottom-crust), has pastry lining the baking dish, and the filling is placed on top of the pastry but left open.

A top-crust pie has the filling in the bottom of the dish and is covered with a pastry or other covering before baking.

A two-crust pie has the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell.

I tried a frey bentos pie recently and expected it to be just like I remember. It was actually full of fresh air and hardly any meat or filling but lots of gravy. Maybe it was my memory but everything made cheaper these days. I prefer a pukka pie but homemade best of all.

Not sure who made it but there was a tinned meat product that marketed itself as, 'No fat or gristle, 100% guaranteed'. It was all reconstituted meat so no chance of finding fat or gristle.

"Are Fray Bentos pies overrated? It's a right pain in the arse to open the tins.

I prefer a Pukka Pie."

Ahhh the childhood memories Fray Bentos pies, cut your fingers to shreds trying to open one then savour the delights of the wobbliest puff pastry in the world

My nan’s spare room.

Holland’s pies are the yardstick when it comes to a pie, Frey Bentos however are very good indeed.

Near Wellingborough

I do love a frey bentos but I've lost count how many tin openers I've sacrificed trying to get into one. Thats why I usually stick to a nice pukka

You really can't beat a steak and haggis pie with a cheesy shortcrust pastry
