Its an intersting one. Words like prick and cock (slang terms for Male bits) are sort of funny inoffensive little insults. However a word for lady bits gets some people so hot under the collar. Its a bit misogynistic when you think about it. The worst insult is to be likened to a lady garden? What does that say about society's attitudes towards women?

Many debates on the origin of the word cunt

My favourite origin is it is derived from cunnus meaning swords sheath in Latin. Cunt is my favourite profanity I take no offence to it.

Anyone who doesn't like the word and thinks its not nice, or that it isn't appealing means yes you are taking offence to it. If you can't bring yourself to say it you take offence to it.

Why is cunt so much more offensive than the rest? When it was originally noted in the dictionary it was spelt c**t or just **** with a description. What makes this single word enrage people so much? It's the only word that can piss most women off in 3 seconds. The look of disbelief of someone saying it then a rant about the fact it's been said.

I watched a stand up who made some valid points around purposes of words.

People will try to demean others as weak by calling them a pussy but compliment their bravery by saying they have balls.

The pussy is the stronger part; having to cope with menstruation and childbirth

Whereas balls retreat at even cold water and if kicked or even fondled the wrong way become an Achilles

So by the same ethos - cunt as a word intended to demean should be reclaimed

Well it’s an individuals opinions on it. I find it offensive and derogative but that’s only my opinion. Whereas others like it. I think if one is unsure of anyone’s opinion of the word then use manners and do not use these unconventional words in case they offend.

Manners should be displayed at all times, difficult for some Fab members I know that.

It doesn't have to bother you if anyone says it but if it vexes you to say it or think it then it's offensive to you.

I have a word I find offensive I can't even bring myself to say and thought of it annoys and angers me and that's N***** derogatory term for black person. It truly vexes me and *facepalm* when people use it towards another given the history of the word and why it was used.

Yet the N word doesn't inspire as much hate as the word cunt and no one has ever been able to explain to me why they find it so offensive.

As so many have already said, context is everything.

In a sexual context, I love its usage - there's no other description (for me) which hits the spot, so to speak, in terms of earthy rawness and sheer unbridled lust. Someone referring to my cunt at the right moment is a huge turn on.

But when used as a direct insult, and especially (it feels to me) if it's a man using it towards a woman face to face, it makes me feel very uncomfortable in a way that goes beyond mere 'offence'. Probably because in that situation it's almost always spat out with such aggression, venom and contempt. Like it or not, it seems to have become the very 'worst' profanity in our society and there's a large part of me which feels offended by that.... not at all because I'm some sort of sensitive flower but because I feel fucked off that another word (albeit one that's usually taboo) for female genitalia has been appropriated in such a way. It feels... I don't know... *misogynistic* I guess as it's acquired all these highly negative connotations which simply don't apply as severely to comparable 'male' insults/swear words.

In a more general context, e.g. if you're describing someone truly awful then I agree sometimes there simply isn't a strong enough word to convey how foul they are. But at the same time, I have this nagging voice in the back of my head questioning whether I should be using it at all in that context given my unease about its misogynistic properties.

I'd really like to see it 'downgraded' with it's ability to 'shock' or offend diluted. And for it to be seen as risqué (rather than disgraceful) or even, amongst friends bantering, a term of endearment or amusement.... much like 'cock' can be. But to achieve that, you'd have to use it more often so it lost some of its power and you then go back to the conundrum of what contexts are 'acceptable' or not!!

It's actually a word from Middle English and although considered bawdy at the time (as most slang for genitals usually are), wasn't the obscenity it is today. Anyone who's studied the Canterbury Tales might remember it cropping up there quite matter of factly with the intent of giving the reader or listener a good saucy laugh. I don't know why there was a subsequent shift to this far more negative usage in following centuries?

Wow such a diverse and concise spectrum of very different opinions on the use of the word here, each just as valid as the next, I think that we can conclude from this thread that the use of the word comes down to purely personal preference and it’s ok to hold your own opinion while respecting other people’s , even if that opinion differs from your own.,

I have a old Playstation wrestling game where you can build your wrestlers and I had a bunch of female wrestlers. The section came up to name your wrestlers so what do I name one .....C*** Grabber.

I know....mind of a teenager.

I don't use it in my everyday vocabulary but I prefer to hear women say it rather than men. Posh ones at that, love it when a posh woman starts cussing.
