As long as he is paid minimum wage or above, £6.08 at the minute, there is little else can be taken into account.

I used to be salary paid, and when my wage was divided by my contract hours, then I was on barely above minimum wage. However, taking into account the actual hours I worked, I was on a lot less, but basically there is nothing that can be done, because my contract stated x amount of hours.

Not sure what the minimum wage is Sassy, but he should have a contract stating his hours, & his salary should be at least the minimum wage based on those hours.

I recently looked into this myself, I've had no increase for 5 years, have to work an extra week for no extra, and all bonuses stopped 3 years ago

I'm still above minimum but it's not what I'd hoped for when I got moved from production line to technical office.

I've been in this company for 25 years though and love me workmates, so I stay.

More for less is the management "flavour of the month" at the moment.

They'll soon get that knocked out of them Fia. I can remember when I was like that. Still was up to about 10 years ago. Low pay rises/freezes & redundancies, yet the company is STILL increasing profits, has soured my enthusiasm.

My other half is in a similar position. Worked for same company 38 years, not had a pay rise in eight years, his staff has but the managers haven't.

He's giving himself a maximum of two years before he leaves...unless he burns out before then.

Yeah that's the bit I don't understand, we keep being told they've made record profits - so here's a bacon sandwich on the house lol! wouldn't be so bad if they just lied about it!

Aw, good luck, has he tried speaking to the bosses? maybe if they thought he was gonna leave they might rethink things a little?

Unless it is a small business it is unlikely that they will care. Private business does not have to observe pay freezes, they do it because they know there are loads of peeps looking for jobs right now. Basically, exploitation.

I guess we're all pretty 'fooked' then lol!

I worry a lot about what's ahead. I'm selling my home and will have to move to a not very nice area in order to keep up with mortgage. I can't help thinking though, if nothing improves soon and I end up unable to afford the next one in a few years.... there's nowhere else to go.

Renting is too expensive, no help if yer working, I have visions of ending up in a shitty bedsit and having to give up my job just to stay there

Having worked hard since leaving school, it's a depressing thought and not that unlikely either

My job is insecure and I am facing similar decisions.

Does seem unfair after you have studied hard, worked hard, and raised a family whilst doing it, only to end up selling off what you have built up.

The system seems to encourage not working and living on state benefits these days. Dunno, maybe it is part of the strategy of control.

Middle classes are usually those who push for change. Get rid o them and you can carry on as you like?

Aye

Glad to hear your grandad is happy, it means a lot to actually enjoy where you work, I'm lucky that way too... sometimes it makes up for the money to a degree. x

In my industry 25 years ago I remember an item that is still in use being introduced as the first of it's kind to come in at under £1000 and that was plus vat so was wither £11250 or £1500, forgive me not sure what the vat rate was at that time at that time.

The same item, much superior, is now availble for......................£49.00.

People are having to sell 10s or even 100s of thing to make the same amount of money

When i was working i started out in a nursing home earning minimum wage, i was in house training all the time, working along side nurses and assisting with wound care and dressings etc - LOVED IT

sadly i left to do a community job, was a higher position but wasn't half as interesting. most weeks id end up resenting a certain part of it. wages were almost double. Was more money to carry out more paperwork and not the actual caring side. Was pants to call in District nurses to change ulcer dressings when i was allowed to do them in the nursing home.

Money isn't everything... although it helps
