"Out of curiousity what are the other rules in the rest of the UK re drink? I remember being shocked you could buy it at any time from shops in London - is that still the case? It's 10am-10pm here and we don't have happy hours or multi-buy discounts anymore either. Do England, Wales and Northern Ireland?" Far as I know you can buy it anytime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. I heard you can't buy it on a Sunday morning in southern Ireland. We have happy hours in pubs and I'm sure there are multi buy deals in shops like bargain booze. I guess it's changed now though.

"Worked a treat in Scotland. Stopped alcohol abuse sadly doubled the drug problem cheaper to get off your head on drugs now .really thought that one through our bright peers. Lunatics running the asilum. " you've just straight up made that up. It's only been in a couple of years so it's neither stopped alcohol abuse (not that anyone claimed it would) nor doubled drug use. It's a marathon, not a sprint and worth trying. The results so far are promising with consumption being reduced.

"Hasn't drug abuse gone up quite a lot in Scotland drug capital of Europe one quote ." Sadly, yes, drug deaths have been going up for a while. Before MUP, and mainly in relation to long term heroin users. People aren't moving from Diamond White to smack though, it's two separate issues. Like I said, it's a long term plan and it's being thoroughly reviewed along the way. It can be scrapped after 5 or 6 years if the evidence isn't strong enough to support keeping it up but it's looking good so far so has to be worth a shot, no? Nothing changes if you don't try.

"Whats wrong with home brew??? Nothing wrong with drinking it. I just don't like waiting and making it. Not that I've ever made it. I just imagine it would be a lot of work. " It does take a bit of time, and money too! A friend of mine home brews and sometimes gets clones to make. I know he made an IPA called Two Hearted Ale by Bell's Brewing.

"No £9 for a bottle of cider! I'm guessing it was one of those big bottles P Yes a 3 litre bottle. I reckon this is going to encourage shop lifting and more drug using " Actually, in Scotland it's reduced emergency alcohol admissions significantly over the time since it was introduced.

"It's an hammer to cracking an egg sadly .why should people who enjoy a social drink be punished for a few. As for statistics they can be manipulated to give whatever outcome you like . I do totally agree it's a problem that needs to be addressed but not at the expense of the masses. One other question I would like to know the answer to were dose all the extra tax 100 % to drug and drink abuse very much doubt that's the case ." It's not a few, liver disease and other alcohol related issues are widespread and kill. It's targeted at 'gut rot' drinks that were ridiculously cheap before to move people away from them and discourage young people from starting on them. Things like wine/spirits weren't really affected as they were above the threshold anyway so moderate drinkers can just carry on as normal with no real impact. There was a ton of public consultation before it was brought in and the health, social and financial impact on retailers are all being monitored. It's been a really transparent process, there's loads you can read online on it if you're interested. The additional money stays with the retailer, it's not a tax, and it compensates for selling less by pricing it more sensibly.

Alcoholic liver disease is killing more and more people and younger and younger people. This needs to change and as education clearly is not working this is very much needed

"One last question are you in anyway involved in this program ? You seem to be very well informed about the progress of this experiment. " Me? Nah, not involved in any way. I'm just a dweeb who's interested in things to do with public health and welfare etc. None of it's secret though, it's all published info and featured in the news quite a lot this year so far as the first progress report came out. Sorry, didn't mean to derail Mickey's thread though, I also miss cheap cider at BBQs sometimes lol, was just giving the bigger picture
