No, I’m not talking about the mindless folks you come online

I question, as a civilisation (humans) have we lost knowledge from our ancient ancestors?

I find it strange they had knowledge of the stars, solar system & universe before inventions which allow modern man to explore these things we’re even created.....

Most people in western society couldn't even last a couple of days out in the wild! Knowing what to eat, where to get it and how to prepare it, how to keep warm and dry, how to source water to drink etc, basic survival skills that even the Neanderthals must have had. Never mind knowing how to navigate by the stars, make tools and weapons from scratch, forge metals and things like that. We've definitely lost a lot of knowledge and skills that would have been common among ancient people before mass production and industry took over.

We’re just evolving unfortunately we’re not evolving on our own we have allowed the technology we created to influence the way we evolve and I fear it’s irreversible now we will eventually evolve Ai to replace us

What they had which we're missing was a nice clear view of the stars. Watching them move can give a pretty good idea of how the universe works.

But they didn't understand gravity (Newton or Einstein). They didn't have a heliocentric solar system. All of that took time and lots of observation. And science.

That was there universe and up to a hundred years ago our galaxy was our universe never mind the 200 billion galaxies that we know are out there now

I saw something showing hieroglyphics that depicted all the planets actually, obviously i’m no expert...just an intrigue of mine.

These things needed to be passed on. Literacy was often low, writing materials expensive. The leisure to be educated and have time to pass things on not necessary for sheer survival. Not always available to most humans for most of our history. And when it is passed on, sometimes it's misinterpreted over time, or materials are lost or destroyed, knowledge might be suppressed by political forces wanting to suppress particular things, even down to scribe error.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, intellectually. But what was passed on, we're sometimes incredibly lucky to have.

History shows that knowledge is easily forgotten - when the Romans left Britain, the art of building with bricks was completely lost within a couple of hundred years. Communications in ancient times probably weren't great, so information and knowledge could only go so far. Saying that, there are probably millions of ancient artefacts, 99.99% of which are complete fantasy. Those that seem comparable to modern knowledge maybe just "best guesses" of the time.

That's not true. We've got plenty of monuments to rival the pyramids that will likely last a good long while. And if some distant future civilisation goes to the moon they'll realise we beat them to it.

I'm finding this interesting. To be clear I totally don't buy the idea of an ancient (superior?) civilisation along the lines of Atlantis, which is where it seems like you're going.

The pyramids have only been around for about 4000 years. The earth been habitable for humans for about 4.5 billion years. If, for example, there had been a polar shift in history, the "pyramids" of 2 billion years ago could be 7 miles deep in the ocean.

I’m not really going down the Atlantis path but I do wonder why these ancient civilisations were able to build similar structures all in different areas of the world on scales that we can’t fathom or recreate now.

Have you seen the giant stones carved in Lebanon? Amazing feats that can’t be explained today

We have lost practical skills and knowledge that were relevant and essential to our ancestors in their less chaotic lives. Today advanced technology does most things for us in our much more complex and distracted societies.

So I don't worry about the loss of practical abilities as much as I rue the loss of social skills, fulfilment and appreciation of simple pleasures that our ancestors within living memory had.

Theoretically, the planet could have supported complex life 4.5 billion years ago. Geologists have found rocks that are 4.3 billion years old and include minerals that required abundant water to form. It's mostly theory, backed up with some data on both sides.

It likely won't happen with Coronavirus but it would only take something similar to break down law and order in a short space of time and you would quickly realise how useful those skills are. I've been on survival exercises with the military that teach all that stuff, good skills to have even if you never end up using them.

One theory is that it was built in a shallow sea port, to impress visitors. A bit like the Colossus of Rhodes.

We are a carbon based life form not water. We need water but all known life is carbon based. There have been theories on what a silicon based life form would be like but we are very much carbon based.
