...how worried are you?

It's a pandemic (just not official) and UK deaths predicted are 500,000 so will you refrain from venturing to clubs, parties and other places where lots congregate?

I'm a little worried now because two schools quite near where I live in Cheshire of Cheshire have closed after students came back from a skiing trip in Italy with flu like symptoms

I have type 1 diabetes which affects the immune system and other health problems considered quite serious so veing realistic I could die if I caught it.

I'm Not able to work currently and sovt really have a social life so it's not like I leave the house much, so I'll be fine.

I'm sure if I did and people on here found out they woyld 've glad this witch has snuffed it any way.

London

My sister lives in Milan, one of the areas in quarantine. They are not allowed to leave the area, all schools and places people gather are closed. My niece is going stir crazy as no where for her and her friends to meet.

My brother-in-law works the other side of Milan and has been told to work from home. His parents, in their 90s, live outside the quarantine area but the virus doesn't recognise boundaries.

I live and work in London, in the two areas where people have been diagnosed with the virus. A colleague came back from Thailand on Friday and was asked at the airport if she was ill. They took her temperature and let her through.

Lockdown or complacency? I don't know the answer.

I'm not worried at the moment. We have a lot of systems in place in the UK and our infection control is excellent. It may just fade out like the other flu's. My only concern is that we don't have enough knowledge about it, is incubation periods etc yet which could be the crux in stopping the spread.

Have your work not implemented the self isolation advice from the government? We had someone travel back from Singapore via Malaysia 2 weeks ago and told him to self isolate.

In the last week week I’ve come through Dubai, Amsterdam , Paris and Birmingham international and saw huge numbers of masks. Yet yesterday Heathrow T3, St Pancras and Victoria didn’t see a single mask.

Londoners don’t panic. We survived 2 world wars, various terrorist attacks and more recently Brexit , we can survive this

maybe they have just read the fact that they are saying masks are not much help for the general public.. and washing hands often or using anti bacterial spray on your hands is the best option against it.

I thought this from the start. Masks don’t protect you at all , they only stop carriers spreading it - do people really not know this ?

But then I heard it’s hard to transmit from hard surfaces , so why does washing hands help ?

Washing hands world because we pick things up on our hands from eneryday shared things like door handles and remotes, where bugs can live. We then transmit them to eyes, nose and mouth.

If you practice awareness of not touching your face, you no no longer catch colds.

I think we are being lied to

it helps for most viruses.. have you seen when they do those photos of how many germs on rails and door handles etc.. . I'm no germaphobe.. but even I get a little OCD with my hand washing... think most of the advice is basic advice as they are not really sure how its transferred as yet but just that masks dont really help unless someone is trying not to infect others.

Regular flu kills lots of people every year.

Car accidents kill more than plane accidents, but it's plane crashes that make the news. Your more likely to have an accident driving to the airport.

People are generally bad at estimating risk.

Don't bury your head in the sand, but don't panic either. Stay safe and healthy.

"Who has it

Those in quarantine "

Incorrect !! Everyone in quarantine does not have the virus. They are there as a precaution because of where they have been or, as an example, the residents of the hotel in Tenerife are in lockdown / quarantine as one man from Italy staying there fell ill and tested positive for the virus. It does not mean that all those at the hotel are sick, but instead being held to see if any symptoms develop. This is no different than the individuals that were on the cruise ship or nationals in China repatriated back to the UK, they all went into quarantine.

It is basic precautions being put in place

And in McDonalds I never use those touchscreens.. I wonder how often they are cleaned properly. Germs are everywhere..I also have a theory about those chemicals that promise to kill 99.9% of all germs. They encourage the growth of superbugs.

Definitely not something to worry about at the moment. The chance of you catching it at the moment is still incredibly small and even if you were to it’s highly, highly likely that you’d recover. Given the number of cases, you’re more likely to die from flu than coronavirus and we don’t tend to walk around terrified if flu. If the number of cases goes up dramatically here then we’re well placed to deal with it and those most vulnerable (sick and elderly) will need to exercise additional caution.

London

The figures in the original post come from a Dept of Health "worst case scenario" estimate - 80% of the UK population infected, 500,000 deaths, around 2% of those infected.

The website of the US CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) points out that there were three flu pandemics in the 20th Century:

1918-1919 Most severe, caused at least 500,000 U.S. deaths and up to 40 million deaths worldwide.

1957-1958 Moderately severe, caused at least 70,000 U.S. deaths and 1-2 million deaths worldwide.

1968-1969 Least severe, caused at least 34,000 U.S. deaths and 700,000 deaths worldwide” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)

Interestingly, the website states (and this was written before COVID 19 emerged) that the U.S. Government currently estimates that a severe pandemic could cause illness in up to 90 million Americans (30% of the population) and result in up to 1.9 million U.S. deaths. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).

Like the UK estimate, that's a death rate of around 2%.

The COVID 19 death rate is just over 3%.

"Who has it

Those in quarantine "

No, those in quarantine are held in order to stop the spread, as someone close to them has it and they could possibly be infected.

However, close quarantine like on a cruise ship, in an hotel, or if you live in communal accommodation (block of flats etc) puts you at much higher risk of getting infected, whilst lowering the risk to those outside who you would otherwise have come into contact with.

Greatest good of the greatest number....pray you dont end up in quarantine.

A young family member is also immune compromised so it's very concerning but can't make it not happen so I'll just have to try try to do the best I can to keep our health as good as it can be rn and be sensible about minimising contact if it's in local area/city

"...how worried are you?

Discuss x"

Really 500,000? Where did you hear that? Not reading the Sun or the Mail are you? In China, over 100,000 reported cases. Death rate, less than 2%. UK, 60 billion people, death rate @ 2% = 1,200,000 if and that's a big IF, every single person catches it. So to reach your 500000 at least half of the UK would have to catch the virus. Chances of that are? The only people really are risk are the elderly, the infirm, those with underlying illnesses made deadly by the flu. More people die each year of the normal flu, by a huge margin at that, than those with this new strain. It's the flu, it's a bugger but the vast majority won't catch it and, again, the vast majority will be fine from those that do. As corporal Jones says ... Don't panic!

Snap.

The problem is Iv seen a news report about the man from Brighton and his wife said it was all fuss over nothing and he wasn't that unwell so shouldn't have to be quarantined.

But the issue is he may be fit and well but many aren't. I think we all have a responsibility to help keep others safe.

"My sister lives in Milan, one of the areas in quarantine.

Have your work not implemented the self isolation advice from the government? We had someone travel back from Singapore via Malaysia 2 weeks ago and told him to self isolate. "

No...Nothing at all.

"In the last week week I’ve come through Dubai, Amsterdam , Paris and Birmingham international and saw huge numbers of masks. Yet yesterday Heathrow T3, St Pancras and Victoria didn’t see a single mask.

Londoners don’t panic. We survived 2 world wars, various terrorist attacks and more recently Brexit , we can survive this maybe they have just read the fact that they are saying masks are not much help for the general public.. and washing hands often or using anti bacterial spray on your hands is the best option against it.

I think we are being lied to "

I don’t really like people saying don’t panic When medical experts are preparing for a pandemic.

Equally though I don’t like people ramping up an apocalyptic situation. I think everyone should just be weary and cautious that this could hit the U.K. and dial down the tone to be honest. If you’re affected, self isolate where possible. I’m not that worried personally

You need to check your figures. Firstly there are 60 billion people in the U.K. and secondly the mortality rate of the normal flu is less than 1%

Another thing to take into account is that we don't really know the mortality rate of this particular virus as it can't be calculated until it all over. There are currently many people who have it who will probably due from it so they are only calculated into one aspect. Also there are many who have had it in a mild form, and never reported it so they aren't included in the calculation.

Personally my main concern is the rate at which it has spread and the authorities precautions against it, and the deceptive, secretive nature of the country it has come from.

If everyone starts wearing masks when they dont need to, will it lead to more panic?

It's not Panic...it's being aware and realising the truth..

People will die and some people are in a cocoon ..

Wake Up ..

I know, there I was thinking thinking this thread pandemic was dying out and there's another outbreak

But surely if he knows something that will save me getting a mild cough, I have to be told

Mild if you are healthy.

I don't think we should be at panic stations but it is to be taken seriously.

Taken seriously certainly, overreacted to? No.

Masks being worn on the tube, staff in Canary wharf building sent home...?

Yes of course. Surely that's just sensible precautions.

What is going to the issue is people saying it's a "mild" cold.

People are dying so if we can take sensible action to reduce spread, why would we not?

Should we not just be following the guidelines issued by the government? Bin tissues, wash hands with soap and water / gel?

And self quarantine if we have been to affected areas.

Only 2% of people who contract the virus die and most of them are the elderly with underlying health problems

If they were to publish the amount of people who die from the flu every year they would call that a pandemic

To be fair the main focus is (wrongly) on the deaths in the mainstream media which is why people compare it. What is going under the radar is the side effects and other consequences it will have due to people being isolated from work etc. But that is barely getting a mention. Which is a huge part of the problem.

People can be flippant and avoid the seriousness of it in a discussion like this, especially when you have likes of Tom's approach to. It is quite natural for people to take a stance of their own, in their own way against overactions like that.

I am at risk, I know others who are at risk. Our attitudes in such a way make no difference to the outcome of what will happen. Our actions of such things will. My attitude (which is pretty obvious from my posts about it) has zero impact on my actions when it comes to the safety of myself or others.

Which is what the vast majority of people with the same attitude as myself will be doing when the time arises.

I don't know where you are getting you fugures from but they differ greatly from anything I have seen anywhere.

The "seasonal flu" is not even one strain of flu, it's a coctail of flu strains. None of these is 3 months old and there are vaccines for them.

My figures for mortality rate of COVID-19 are 3 or 4%. CFR is 8%.

From the CDC on seasonal flu uour lookimg at about 0.35% just short of 80 000 people per year.

Not remotely worried. SARS didn't get me. MERS didn't get me, Bird flu, Swine flu, and that one you're supposed get from kissing girls all failed to do me in. I reckon this one will be about as devastating as the rest (i.e. not very).

If I die of irony tomorrow, you'll all have to fight amongst yourselves over my record collection...
