Ok I'm Scottish and would love Scotland to get independence when the time comes, the Scots want it, the Welsh want it, why don't the English want it? I also think when they do finally have a vote, should English people also be allowed a vote to see if they actually WANT to be part of the Scotland and Wales? I think it's only fair.

If there is a heave cost to it then you have to work out if its worth it but apart from that I have no real issues either way.

I know a fair few Scottish people that DONT want it.. So do not assume they all want it.. as if they did.. then they would have it.

And since I probably know more scots than you do, and live between Newcastle and Glasgow I also know some who don't, but know a load more who do.

The English would be financially better off but would we be socially and would it cause divides?

It's not about north sea oil ( that will dry up at some point) its about identity and having a say about your own country. England is far richer than Scotland yet they can offer, free prescriptions, eye tests, education etc. since having their own parliament (sort of) they have made great changes up there. My real point here is I also think if scots & welsh can have a say then surely the English should also be allowed a vote.

I think the drive for independence was as a result of Braveheart, where an Australian with an American accent posing as a Scotsman wearing a kilt raised some national pride, it was only a Film Dear lol

If the majority of Scottish people wanted this why did Alex Salmond hold off with his referendum until he has swayed the Scotts opinions and interests, simmple he knows he would lose, personally I couldnt care less where the parliament is, Cardiff, Edinburgh or London, as long as they govern properly and stop leading us into all this financial shit they keep getting us into.

If Scotland & England are run separately and Scottish people enjoy state-funded luxiries the English don't get, and if Scottish Unis can subside Scottish students in english Unis, but still charge the full whack for English students in Scottish Unis, and if Scottish people can get free prescriptions whilst English people have to pay for theirs - then let Scotland split and fund itself. North Sea resources should remain in the hands of those who currently own though, but maybe pay a licence to Scotland to farm it.

Just because the minority shouts louder does not mean they are the majority. A fair vote is whats needed.

England would get a short term gain IF they pull all military, industry, and government agencies back over the borders, but then we would not be friendly and in direct competition with both Scotland and Wales which would be bad for all 3 in the long run.

So if they own it now they can keep it? Lol

Sorry but that's the type of attitude scots want away from, as for free education why should Scotland find English students for free when their own country wants to over charge them? C'mon!

Scotland is trying to make Scotland a fair place to live. We have more pandas in Scotland than Tory mp's for a reason.

Totally disagree! I'm scots and live mainly in England. It's nothing about hating England, it's about having complete say on how to run Scotland. As I said wouldn't your country be happier of things were made fairer. Healthcare education etc, If Scotland can do it so can England. But they don't

She'd point out that she was English and then it would be laughed off as "Och noo, you're one of us now lassie."

There is much hatred of the English north of the border. Enough to take Scotland independant, I'm not sure, but it's there.

Also, I think it is a matter for the Scots to vote on, and England should not vote on Scottish independence, and neither should Wales.

hi all - my lovely sexy "f" asked me to add to this thread; as my family is multiculti meaning British and European.

British with big roots in Scotland (Clan without land) and European as German, Italian, Swiss and French relatives/family...

The SNP are painting a simple picture for independence and not thinking, that for example the EU (yes hated) will not accept another country into the EU. That all the benefits Scotland are getting at the moment via the British membership will fall away - bang a big hole of approx. £3billion (where to cover this hole?.

Also I think, that then the Bank of England would lose support of the English public, if Scotland, as it stands, want to in the Pound. The reason for this "in" for Scotland is a direct "money drip" in form of cheap interest rates via the City of London and the Bank of England, paid by the rating of England and Wales.

Let us be honest, it was a Scottish King (James I), who declared and created the Union; not as a certain leader of the SNP is declaring the English - The Union Act brought together two countries, who had over centuries made war upon each other - this union created a sucess story for both sides,eg Robert Adam, William Arrol, Graham Bell and others more unnamed...

This demand again is something driven by one persons private aims to become a point in history... Think about it !

IF we split who says you would have any rights to own property in both countries....or even have the right to work in what would become seperate to you.....shall we brits send u all home....british jobs for british people !!!! get a grip and join 21st century...... the old medeval kingdoms are a thing off the past.

They would still be part off Europe so would be able to work in England

Who says they would automatically become part of europe ?? they would need to apply for membership...and that a nightmare....financial obligations and allsorts"

Better just to leave it as it is then

And since I probably know more scots than you do, and live between Newcastle and Glasgow I also know some who don't, but know a load more who do. "

I wouldnt bet on that seeing as I am married to one and not one of our friends wants to be separate. Oh and my Fathers family are all Scottish too.

If independence does come you know all the rich English will just go and buy up the best properties in Scotland anyway.

With a bit of global warming Edinburgh will be the new Marbella for the English ex pats.

I don't think it'll actually be good for any of us, including us in England, but I suspect it'll be a damn-site worse for the Scottish and Welsh, if we break up the Union. But if that's what the "majority" in each wants, then lets get on with it.

Just be careful what you wish for though, because they'll be no turning back, no rescue package from England if it does go wrong - the grass is very rarely greener and it'll be real shame if it happens.

EEC Membership would have to be decided by Scotland and the EEC after they split, if they don't want to be in the EEC then we would have technically a border with entry requirements, though I hope common sense would prevail it will be decided by politicians..... so don't count on it!

Sometimes you come across as a bit of a chameleon in your posts. An outsider when it suits and an insider at other times.

There is a London assembly, it's called The Houses of Parliament and it should govern the entire UK but it doesn't. Scotland were permitted to build Holyrood for home rule and the Welsh have their own Assembly too.

What irritates the hell out of me is that Scottish MPs can vote in Westminster on issues that affect England & Wales but Westminster MPs can't vote on purely Scottish matters.

It's a one-way, one-sided street and it needs addressing.

Maybe im wrong here, so il apologise im advance if i am! The way i see it, scotland is already its own country! We just want to break away from the union! I think the majority of scots are sick of being dictated to from westminster!

If for example, say 75% of scots voted snp or labour, do we end up with a snp or labour pm? No, we end up with a tory pm due to fact that we in scotland have only the same population as london has! Why should scots oaps suffer because the english voted in the tories? Why should the scots disabled suffer because the english voted in the tories?

Home rule! Thats what majority of scots want!

The issue is going to be how are either side financed. Scotland get a whopping huge amount of money from Westminster, this will all stop if independence is achieved. I think that it would be crazy to go it alone. Alex Salmond is hoping to then obtain the rights over the north sea oil, which brings in a substantial revenue, but this cannot be relied upon. I live in Scotland and certainly the impression I get is that independence is not really wanted, but wait and see springs to mind.

It does seem strange that Scots are allowed to moan about the English and crow about supporting any team apart from England at various sporting events, but as soon as the English say 'OK then, fuck off back north of the border', they get all sniffy about it. Make your minds up!

Newcastle and Gateshead

The point I was making wishy is that greater London DOES have it's own assembly in which powers for things such as policing, transport and other local thing are devolved downward thru the mayor...

So if it is good enough for London then why is it not good enough for the rest of the country?

"Shall you Brits send us back? Lol get a grip! Really

I haven't considered myself British for quite a few years now. I only have a British passport because I can't get one that says English on it. Unlike Scottish passport holders.

your nationality is BRITISH hence the passport...your native language is ENGLISH XXX"

Legally yes but some scots and welsh i know seem to think of themselves as more 'british' than the english. Or at least have some sort of 'otherness' I agree with them.they're quite welcome to the word. I'm English no matter what my passport says. Incidentally the first two words on my passport are European Union..I'm not one of those either

"Ok I'm Scottish and would love Scotland to get independence when the time comes, the Scots want it, the Welsh want it, why don't the English want it? I also think when they do finally have a vote, should English people also be allowed a vote to see if they actually WANT to be part of the Scotland and Wales? I think it's only fair. "

Actually the last poll taken on it after Salmond last piped up about it showed that the majority of the English asked supported Scots Independence.

So are you sure English people don't want it?.....or are hoping for it?

You obviously never read it. I said I think the people of England should be given the same option of a choice as the scots.

I would relish independence from Scotland as it gets so tedious this constant moaning that they were a subjugated nation and how badly they have been treat by the English.

Cut them loose, eject them from the Stirling and let them join the euro, put border control in place, not pay any benefits out to people born in Scotland let the Scottish government and watch England prosper under a strong conservative government who would not have to subsidise north of Hadrians wall. I do wonder if Scotland would then implode though as they would have to find someone else to complain about.
