So I’m a bit of a stickler for etiquette, and as such am well aware of the tradition of leaving the bottom button open on a waistcoat- however - I’ve just bought a suit with a double breasted waistcoat...what’s the deal there? Do it up, or not?

TIA

Brighton - even Hove!

Doubt breasted waistcoats are more formal but you should still leave the last button undone.

Keep them buttoned up it is usually formal wear. Saying that wear it how you want and don’t be restricted by outdated conventions!

trouble is, a well cut waistcoat is designed to cover the tucked in shirt but also designed so when you sit, it’s comfier with the bottom button undone.

Why is there a button there if you should never do it up?

The tradition dates back to king Edward VII who was too portly to do them all up.

It is permitted to unbutton when sitting, but don’t forget to button it back up.
