As for the press coverage - anyone might think there was an agenda to scaremonger/exaggerate to distract from some of the unsettling and divisive things being pushed through Parliament right now...

He called all the NHS helplines as he recently attended a meeting with Hong Kong work clients. H was simply told to stay home and rest, no test for corona or anything. Does that mean we’re going to be gripped by a virus that makes us feel rotten, stay in bed for three days and go back to work afterwards? Shit. The BBC didn’t fully inform us of the horrific fate that awaits us. Three days feeling a bit shitty. Crikey. I knew we should have populated Alpha Centuria before now.

It's not "the" coronavirus, it's "a" coronavirus. The same family of viruses that you get a cold from. If you're already weakened, very old, very ill etc, it can be dangerous, just like other respiratory illnesses. It's peoples reactions to contagion that's the real danger here. Targeting "others" as perceived sources of infection, for example. The economic and social cost of this will bite deep.

From The Center For Diseases Control.

How many people have died from the flu in 2019?

So far, the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.

4 months = Corona Virus as the Poor Cousin of Viral Killers.

It's just western weaponisation of the situation to try and demonise China.

A few thousand, mostly imuno compromised and elderly people have died worldwide

30,000 to 60,000 die every year in the USA alone from flu and no one is reporting that with the same stupidity.

There are around 1800 deaths and 25,000 seriously injured on the UK roads every year. Are the media hysterically telling everyone yo stop driving?

Many viruses have come and gone but we are still alive.

Why panic and make such a huge scene.

People with poor immune systems are at risk. If your immune system fought off other viruses then Corona should be easy too.

Stop the scare and enjoy life.

What worries me more than the Corona virus is that there are members on here who have unprotected sex. That’s worse.

Start using protection.

There’s whole pandemic plan in place!

A cunning plan no doubt "

Come on then, what’s your plan (beyond uniting the legions of Swingers) to turn this around?

"Now South Korea and Iran..

It's getting serious guys ..

Are the media hysterically telling everyone yo stop driving?"

Yeah it’s all the west’s fault lol. No wait- a Chinese doctor warned the Chinese authorities about it and they told him to get Tay fuck. Oh, and then he “died”. ( we all know what whistleblowers get in China and North Korea)

Yep 2,700 deaths world wide so far of mostly elderly and immuno compromised people warrants mass hysteria whilst there are 30,000 to 60,000 flu deaths per year just in the USA and whilst there have been nearly 6000 gun violence deaths in the USA in 2020 already.

According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries caused an estimated 1.35 million deaths a year worldwide. Haven't seen anyone getting hysterical about that either and seeking to ban road vehicles.

Mostly in poorly equipped medical facilities

There is no list of ages, but I imagine 98% are elderly or very young, as is the case with the small number of those who sadly died in well equipped countries

Well, yeah. But what's the cut off point?

I doubt it will be as bad as Spanish flu was.

I think most of it is media frenzy, causing unnecessary panic.

What can you do about it?

Nothing.

How can you stop yourself potentially getting it?

You can't.

Is worrying about it and stressing yourself and others about it going to help?

Not at all.

It's another virus, like sars, mars, mad cow, foot and mouth, bird flu and the rest of the things nature throws out at us that the media instantly say we are all going to die of.

Anyway, as it's the end of the world, would anyone like a pint, chat and amazing sex?

I largely agree.

I'm not panicking or worrying but I am making contingency plans on my head for my elderly parents should thinks go pear shaped in terms of them or is being required to self isolate.

I don't recall any authority in Europe requiring communities to be put into quarantine since the plague though . And yes I was alive then

"I doubt it will be as bad as Spanish flu was." Based on?

One of the reasons the Spanish Flu was so widespread is that there were large numbers of soldiers returning from war. At this time it was an unusual amount of travel.

Today there is more travel compared that time.

Also the world population at that time was 1.8 to 1.9 billion. Today it is 7.7 billion.

While it is true that we have have better medical care now than we did then we also have larger problems with diabetes (an underlying condition) and HIV/Aids which wasn't around then.

If this hits Africa south of Egypt (and it would be a miracle if it didn't) then this could get way out of hand.

Good that you're optimistic though.

What can you do about it? Stay at home if you have symptoms. Don't send your kids to school if they have symptoms.

There is a vaccine, however you need a lot of it to get a current outbreak under control.

Its not enough to give it to one person at a time as you get one supply. You need to buy in millions, and start doing whole cities.

Thats why Bill gates does not invest in cures, and only invets in vaccines. The news has shown previously that before any corna virus outbreak happened, bill gates funded labs had samples, and had vaccine patents in place.

The current system seems to be, the outbreak happens in China who does not respect patents, lots die there, by the time it gets to Europe it kills no more than a normal flu, but from now on, the government pays for one more flu vaccine for a couple of million people.

We should be very clear about this, bill gates does not invest in cures, only vaccines. He even wants HIV vaccines.

Biochemistry isn't my strongest point but in order to develop a vaccine which the common concensus from the various proffesors etc is about a year, do they not have to have an actual virus to work from?

Forgive me if I've read your post wrong but are you suggesting that a vaccine has been developed before this particular strain appeared?

To be fair this strain appeared at least a month before it all kicked off. So potentially a vaccine could have been in the works before the masses even knew the virus existed. It also being a strain of a known virus allows a lot of the ground work to already be in place, the issue is what the new strain has mutated a defense for but still the base knowledge for the vaccine is already there.

You are more at risk of dying from the normal seasonal flu virus.

Stop stressing about it.

More chance of dying from normal flu than Covid 19."

Thanks for that fact. What was the final death toll of the COVID-19 virus?

How long did it last?

Covid-19 1% mortality.

Normal flu 5%.

We have ‘flu season’ every year, more people die from flu than this virus (so far) but ... we don’t close countries for it. This is something different whether folk want to acknowledge it or not.

The difference is how contagious it is.

Doesn't matter what the death rate is, Who is vulnerable etc it is the fact that is is highly contagious, extremely easy to pass on. It is unlikely that this will be something that wipes out a huge chunk of the population. It will be on equal risk in terms of fatality to most other common virus.

But the number of people that are catching it is what has got the world in such a state, large numbers of people ill at the same time (regardless of fatality) is going to cause chaos in lots of areas, services, and industries.

Lots of people die from all kinds of diseases and accidents every day all over the world. Death is one of the two things that is guaranteed in life. (Taxes is the other).

While I'm not worried about it or going to change anything its useful to know that there is something else out there that may or may not get us. We'd be peed of if something happened and we didn't know about it.

actually.... a few things here...

1) the death rate for Covid 19 is actually slightly higher than that of the flu........ not by much but lets be factually correct here...

2) SARS actually had a much higher death rate than the flu and covid 19... it just that less people were infected with SARS

the death rate from SARS was actually 8-9% whereas the death rate for Covid is roughly at the 2% mark.....

The problem is, is that Covid is more contagious than normal flu so each infected person with Covid on average infects 3 to 4 people. Each flu carrier infects 1.5 people.

I seem to remember the 1919 flu epidemic killed more than WW1.

Only way to stop it spreading is to stop all travel for quarantine period.

Maybe I'm ignorant but isn't the seasonal flu a cocktail of viruses that have been around for years?

Why are multiple viruses that have been around for who knows how long being compared to one virus that is just 3 months old?

Exactly, this is more contagious it seems and therefore it needs to be addressed differently and we need to acknowledge the difference.

Quoting flu numbers doesn’t change what is happening now. On the .Gov website it clearly tells people what to do but people aren’t doing it. We have just had half term, some are on half term this week. There has been extensive travel and lots of school trips. It’s inevitable that the numbers will take a leap.

Depends on where you get the figures and which you believe.

Normal flu death rate varies between 2 and 65% !!!!!

Exactly this.

It has nothing to do with the morality rate.

Do people know what a pandemic is? It is the rate it is spreading, how contageous it is.

There are also flu vaccines that save ALOT of elderly. Without a vaccine and the rate it is spreading, it is much more dangerous than flu.

Tom there is no logic in you saying we are being sold down the river because others on here are saying there are differences etc in seasonal flu and it's mortality..

How does that equate to your initial claim?

How does one calculate death rate?

2% of 80 000 known infected is 1600. Over 2600 people have died.

And that's assuming that none of the 40 000 open cases have 0 fatalities. With 9000 serious/critical.

It sort of makes sense to self isolate if people have been to an area where there is a spike in cases, respect it comes with issues for families as to who is isolated within the family and what that means for self employed etc..

The advice from the government is a bit all over the place but that's nothing new and will change as numbers rise, one hopes..

True, that there are places like Italy and probably Iran where it looks like its taking a hold tells me it's a bit late and it's going to be all over the place..

Be interesting to see what happens when a town or city is isolated here..
