25% of Brits make social plans with no intention to go

The Independant reported this research:

More than a quarter (26 per cent) of Brits admit to saying yes to a social invitation despite having absolutely no intention of attending, according to a new study.

As a result around one third of social plans that are made actually never happen.

And don't we know it folks!

I can sell believe this.

It's never happened to us on fab but I think we all know one of two people who never go through with social plans.

Did they offer an explanation or opinion as to why, and what age groups etc.?

(Cannot read the independent where I am from).

The best type of plans are cancelled plans apparently.

I think it's knowing you could go out and that you have options - rather than sitting in on a Saturday night without being invited out.

Or something like that

This bugs me. Just say you're not going! It's always the same people too, so why don't they just say at the start, sorry I can't make it.

I mean in general, not on fab.

This totally gets on my tits. If I say I'm going to something I go to it unless I tell the person from day one that I'm unsure.

I always turn up if I arrange something, and if I can't make it I let people know. Ghosting is bad enough with dating, never mind established friends doing it because they can't be arsed turning up for something.

Here ...

I've lost 'friends' over this. Stopped asking them to events then just drifted away as we obviously didn't have many common interests.

I can understand this figure but it doesn't mean one friend lets another down.

I see notes going up in work advertising socials. Everyone goes ooo meeeeee and puts their name down. Then slowly the names come off , the excuses come in and some just don't turn up even if they buy tickets.

One of the reasons is they are shit at verbalising their REAL feelings. No one wants to be seen as a pooper or labelled as mean or unsociable........ so they put their name down cos it's easier to say yes. .......

I say , no thanks not for me, if I don't want to go ...... some people take it personally .....

Im going to see a 'friend' in two weeks cos I didn't come up with a reason to not to quick enough.

I've put her off for ages now.

I do like her. Can't stand long with her though.

So ........ what am I going to do to STOP her asking me over.

I groan when she calls on the phone.

Speaking as someone who is in the position of your friend at the moment I'd say she's probably realising slowly how you feel and will soon solve the problem for you.

It takes a little while for it to sink in

Go once more but leave a massive log in her toilet that won’t flush, she won’t ask you again.

Ah right. I think my friend likes me but prefers the company of her newish man friend. There are only so many cancellations of lunch "because it's raining" that I'll tolerate though.

You see this is the sort of thing we could discuss on our over 60s thread.

Why doesn't my friend take my calls?

Why won't my friends boyfriend let her go out?

It's almost (almost) as if we're real people even though we're old

I'm the opposite ( of course)

I very rarely accept or make social plans unless I'm nigh on certain I can or will make it

Brighton - even Hove!

The English find it more polite to say yes and then no at a later date rather than say no immediately.
