I read an article about whether veganism is compatible with keeping a pet. Is keeping a pet an exploitation of the animal?

I would argue that birds should not be kept in cages but can't see the harm in having a dog.

I have a pet, he's a rescue cat I've had for almost 6 years. I would never buy an animal for the purpose of keeping it as a pet.

But of you're giving a home to an animal that would otherwise be killed I think that's the right thing to do and definitely isn't exploitation.

And before you ask, no, I don't feed my cat a vegan diet.

If you are supporting an animal that would suffer otherwise or die, and it has freedom and lots of love and respect, then it's fine

Surely buying a pet is giving them a home. What if you want an big dog but get a hamster just because no one wants it

2020 I guess it's all abit silly can't pick your nose without offending someone

What would a vegan feed a cat or dog with? Do plant based meals exist for known meat eaters such as cats etc?

Yep, plenty of vegan cat and dog food out there. Venovo (I think) is one of the main brands, our dog loves it.

You do not, I repeat DO NOT feed a carnivorous animal a vegan diet. It's incredibly unhealthy for them, they require meat to survive and thrive properly. Never force your own food choices on an animal

Well if it’s your nose & you have consent & it would go unpicked without you, then it’s ok. An unpicked nose is a terrible thing. You have my full support...assuming you are not vegan a bogies are an animal product.

I don't like that, I'm not a vegan. I don't like rabbits in hitches either

If you have a cat flap then I think it is perfectly ethical to have a cat as they can roam at will and then choose to return to your house.

Dogs particularly, can be fed a vegan diet as they are omnivores- not so much cats though there are some options there too.

I should make it clear, as above. Even though I'm vegan, my cat isn't, and I don't condone feeding none herbivorous animals a vegan diet. I'm just saying that it is possible.

Dogs do better than cats on none meat based diets. Cats straight up need meat as their body does not produce certain amino acids a vitamins.

However omnivorous or not, dogs are still carnivorous based omnivores. They are in a state of partial evolution adapting to human choices. They gain much more of their nutrition from meat than they do from other foods. The majority of fruit and veg for dogs is just stomach filler, their bodies don't absorb them the way we do.

My dogs main diet consists of raw meat, offal, and bone. Never had or seen healthier dogs.
