I suspect traditional media outlets are well aware that they are a big part of the current problem, so are jumping heavily on social media to deflect criticism from themselves.

Lots of people seem to forget that the media and social media consist of us.

They aren't some mystical entity that exist separately to society, they bloody represent it.

I'm trying to avoid too much of it at the moment and wait until the hysteria has died down a bit. Then see if any useful and positive changes are made as a result.

I think the phrase "be the change you want to see" has never been more apt.

Exactly, it is what the people using it have made it. Don’t like it? Then don’t use it.

The media are just a part of the problem. People as a whole are the main issue, social media allows it to reach a broader audience, the media know full well what they are doing by storing the pot and encouraging people to be vile.

Its a self serving circle of life that consumes itself, dies out a little when something tragic happens, then starts up again with vengeance when something know takes the spot light.

Currently the media are trying to act all innocent but they know full well their part in it.

We should be able to self regulate.

It’s like anything, the minority ruin it. The problem is their input can have far reaching consequences.

Probably more justified than some of the hysteria I've read about the Corona virus since it affects far more people.

Its tragic that someone gets so low in their life that they feel the only escape from it is to take their own life, I think the biggest problem is worrying about what other people think or say especially online, it's easy for people to sit behind social media and criticise others and cast their opinions on situations they know nothing about and arent privy to the facts as they are, the only way to properly 'deal' with opinions of others is to 100% fucking ignore them, you can't control what other people think or say so bollocks to them live your life be happy and fuck what other people say, theres always someone out there who will criticise you that's more about them than you, this is especially important if you're in the public eye or a celebrity, unfortunately however these 'celebrities' thrive off the attention which is great when it's good not so much when it's bad

It's human nature to discuss negative things over positive, social media makes it like Chinese whispers, everyone adds or takes abit away and a sniffle turns into amputation of limbs.

I always say hear two sides of a story and the truth will be somewhere in the middle.

Social media is something that can't be controlled.

Parents should teach their kids about how it works before they give them access to it.

As for adults, nothing really can be done unfortunately.

I don't agree.

People trash non celebrities on social media too.

Individuals should give their heads a bloomin wobble and think on before they try and tear people down.

School kids are being viciously bullied via social media, adults too.

But social media isn't just the press - its anyone and everyone and a world where anonymity allows people to be arseholes and say what they want without comeback or consequence.

The forums are no different. Total strangers passing judgement and making comments about opinions and views. Although at least here they're moderated.

The standard of moderation on the bulk of social media sites is laughable.

Theres a huge difference between the press publishing a story, comment or opinion, where there can be legal consequences and a faceless troll ripping someone to shreds with no accountability.

Why hasn't Twitter been banned and removed yet?

It's responsible for thousands of trolls and suicides.

Even the chances of war are increased with Twitter and a world baiting egomaniac trump.

Twitter isn't. Twitter users are.

Until we stop referring to the platform as being at fault rather than the users nothing will change.

Your right! if your allowed to hide behind a keyboard, You will always be viscous with words! If you sign up to these accounts, then your real name and IP address should be disclosed!

If you feel strongly enough, then you wont care, have something to hide? And could be traced, then you wouldn't be a troll in the first place! Trolls need to be outed! No matter the circumstance!

There and to the left a bit

I was having this very conversation with someone last night - social media *has* spiralled out of control in so many ways and *is* used to control people - not just the recent tragic events of the past 48 hours, but in so many other ways too.

People are too ready to believe all they read on social media, and people are all too ready to use that to their own advantage.

To take an undeniable example you only have to look at the rise of Britain First for evidence of how social media can be used to give credence to even the most extreme of views - they manipulated the truth and used social media to spread that manipulation by tugging at emotions of those too ready to believe and hit the "share" or "like" button to spread their word and so grew as a result of it - mercifully it was seen through and clamped down on as they started to believe their own hype and got more and more extreme as time went on - but it still shows how social media is manipulated and manipulative.

The Tories used it to great effect in the last General Election too, as did the media who were behind them.

The trouble is too many people are ready to take their news in soundbites and take it as read that it's true when it appears between the cute puppy videos and pics of what their friends had for dinner.

I barely touch it these days apart from to keep in touch with friends and even that is becoming harder and harder as the social media companies manipulate what appears at the top of my page.

Rubbish. Why should it be accepted as the norm to hound those in the limelight, dredging up stories from the past, interrogating their every move? We need to stand up and be counted and say it's not right! Everyone deserves the right to a private life.... we allow prisoners and criminal suspects more in this respect than we do TV presenters it feels at times.

There are codes and conventions that are governed by according bodies to facilitate and direct what is available and acceptable on the world wide web that is filtered from a world governing body down to each country specifically and that you pay for through subscription through whoever provides that to you.

If you dont like it, then start petitioning for change.

Might I remind you though - your country has strict laws and regulations around little things like the freedom of expression, freedom of press, freedom of speech just to name a few little bumps you are going to run into.

There's a brilliant clip on youtube of Liverpool's manager politely explaining to a sun journalist why he wont answer his questions. Its rate to see the words backed up with actions.

There's a lot of people currently criticising the tabloids and most people will continue to engage with them be that giving interviews or reading them.

I doubt, beyond well intentioned soundbites there will be any significant change

In the great scheme of life, the internet is new. Never before has humanity had the chance to see everything and say anything to everyone, everywhere. I think overreaction is normal and that it will take some time before things even out. When the motor car was invented, many people thought that going over 30 mph would kill them, but they adjusted. It will get better. Talk of banning social media, censoring news stories - these things make me uneasy. They're the actions of a dictatorial leadership.

So do i.

In general the media reflects the way people think rather than influencing it. It just reinforces opinions. Very few people read to challenge their opinions rather than validate them

Keep in mind, social media has allowed many good things to happen as well.

Many people learned they were related to Nigerian princes with a shitload of cash, for example.

It also allows for much more expedient care in disaster situations, another example.

Amber alerts are an amazing tool in finding abducted children and getting large amounts of people clued in very little time.

Traffic and travel is influenced by social media, food most definetly, and let's not forget even high ranking regimes have been brought toppling down because of social media.

-- pluses and minuses in both directions.
