If something good can come out of this poor woman's death, let this be it.

Her boyfriend has set this up, just Google it.

No negativity on this thread please. She was someone's daughter, sister, friend

The good to come out of her death will hopefully be the cancellation of the offensive love island.

Personally I don't read tabloids or social media so I'm not aware of "maltreatment" by the press and Twitter.

Without getting into the rights and wrongs, or the opinions and prejudices, is the expectation of modern life creating more mental fragility or do broadcasters fail in their duties?

Personally, we don't watch reality tv with it's sets of wannabes who want fame for fame's sake (whixh is not a reference to Caroline who was a presenter).

Many many people, have been through horrendous waiting times for trial. Up to 2 years on bail after being charged and awaiting trial. Personally 14 months on bail with a NFA at the end of it. Bail conditions prevented me from working, or seeing my young child (10 years later that estrangement is still there).

No account is taken of a defendant's wellbeing.

I broadly agree with the idea, but having just read the petition some of the stipulations are a bit vague and open to interpretation. Censorship of the press is a slippery slope, and I'm not totally sure where the line should be drawn on what should be reported and what shouldn't.

Is there a danger in forcing a knee-jerk legislation that gives some people, ie "celebrities", a protection from the media that others may not get? I haven't seen the general terms of the proposal, but it's possible that "celebrities" who are truly horrible people could continue their nefarious activities using this legislation to hide from scrutiny.

Indeed. I agree with certain things, there should be some sort of limit in to poking in to people's lives the way that they do. However to get that be specific enough that it protects personal privacy while also protecting freedom of speech is extremely tricky to implement without it rippling out with a few exceptions and loopholes. Censorship is not the answer.

The issue you might have is that celebrities tend to rely on the press to keep them relevant, if the press is restricted, this will also have an impact on their careers. They also tend to love the press if they are on their 'side', but then want the press restricted in other things. They can't really have it both ways.

If you want to be in the public eye you have to expect the media to make you and break you. If you feel hard done by by the press or your mental health is taking a bashing then step out. You cant pick and choose when you want the media to become involved in your life. Yes it's sad as a life is lost and no one should ever be that low that you take your own life but a law against the media interjecting is ridiculous.

I have a few issues about this case and a few issues with the boyfriend which i won’t go into here.

Whilst i agree that what has happened is tragic. Someone has died far too young and who was obviously in emotional distress and turmoil, i don’t think the blame can totally be blamed on the newspapers, online trolls etc. I think, personally, there is more to this case than meets the eye.

Everyone was up in arms about Princess Di’s death and how she was hounded by Paparazzi, and she had Royal Connections. Sod all changed.

And it’s not just the press, it’s everyone. Even us - we’re discussing her now.

I feel so, so sorry for her family. To lose her and to know the bile and venom she was subjected to (whether guilty or not - that’s a seperate issue that the law would have dealt with) and that people are still talking about her.

It shouldn’t have to take a death to make people stop and think about their behaviour.

If i were a member of her family i’d tell everyone to fuck off and mind their own business. The public didn’t look after her wellbeing when she was alive so they can stop using her and her memory now. But that’s just me.

So, if you’re in the public eye, phone tapping by the media is ok?

Taking photos when you’re doing private things with your family is ok?

Even people in the public eye deserve a private life.

Not having any of this tosh.

Her boyfriend begged a 999 call handler to send help after being battered with a lamp whilst asleep.

Then kicked off in custody.

The court was told that Flack was disruptive in police custody, saying: ‘Her behaviour gets worse, she flips over a table and then has to be restrained on the ground.’

If Vernon Kay had battered Tess Daly with a lamp and acted in this manner in custody you wouldn't be calling for 'Vernon's law'

Ban celebrity crap like love island. She wasn't an angel. We don't need a knee jerk law. We need to see this for what it is.

Sad case of someone making a poor life choice, knowing th truth was about to be outed because she didn't just plead guilty in the first place and ending it before facing the music.

More sympathy for anyone who's house has been flooded this weekend.

It's a tragic end to a young life. I am just listening to so called celebrities on the news blaming the press and the same so called celebrities court the press when it suits them.. let the family grieve in privacy and let Caroline, the lady and her memory rest in peace.

Soon the papers will drag up more nonsense.. but are they the monsters or the people who buy the rubbish.

It’s a very sad outcome that we’ve arrived at, but her alleged actions were very troubling. It’s likely true that if it wasn’t a beautiful white woman the coverage and reaction would be different.

That’s not to say that trial by media is ever a fair or correct process.

Everyone talks about 'the press' as though it is somehow separate to the rest of society and is something society has to police. The simple way to police it is to stop buying/watching/reading the crap. If people didn't click on articles that gossip about 'celebrities' then they would soon stop being published.

It's always easier to blame a faceless entity like 'the press' but the truth is anyone who has ever given up their time to read an article (good or bad( about this woman has contributed to her death just as much as'the press' because doing so has given 'the press' an audience.

One caveat - I hadn't heard of her till the other day, don't recognise her photo and have absolutely no idea why she committed suicide and whether or not her suicide was prompted by public opinion. The press and their audience may be innocent, she could have done it because her cat died for all we. know.

Sometimes you hold things in and worry about perception, I’ve been in dark places and to the outside world (family including) I’ve said “I’m ok” put my jazz hands on. There’s a discrimination out there that depression comes with looking awful and never smiling. It doesn’t work like that. I try my best every single day to be happy smiley and put my face on, but inwardly I’m collapsing, want to hide feel inadequate, not good enough, always being judged. But to some they see me probably as someone who’s strong looks good always happy.

Nobody knows what is happening.

One thing I’ve noticed is that if a person has a visible illness they are given so much support, yet when someone says I’m mentally ill, you have some saying “ she’s /he’s off her head, gone mad, not right and lots to that effect.

Why is it that people can’t understand that mental health is just as bad as physical health. If someone was to volunteer for self sectioning as they felt a risk to themselves or others and have help care and in the future be open about having mental health issues unfortunately society as a whole (or some will always say “she/he is a bit mad” however a cancer survivor for instance wouldn’t be given that stigma only sympathy.

I just wish society wasn’t so hard on mental health and be more aware.

There were just under 7,000 suicides in the UK in 2018.

Who bullied the other 6,999 ?

The over simplification of complex issues don't help.

"One thing I’ve noticed is that if a person has a visible illness they are given so much support, yet when someone says I’m mentally ill, you have some saying “ she’s /he’s off her head, gone mad, not right and lots to that effect.

Well said x

He had phoned the police asking for help

I do see a close link to men having to be “men “ man up and such like. Men are supposed to be seen as strong and not weak, same with domestic violence. Something needs to change.

I’m currently volunteering for a men’s mental health group called “ mind”. We as a society need to change our outlook on mental health and that comes with education of our children.

Nobody knows the background. I myself was in a similar situation 5 years ago. I found text on my ex’s phone we had a very heated argument over it where we both were physically (as in I threw my phone at him ) which resulted in him beating the shit out of me.

Long story short I was at my lowest and realised I couldn’t take his mental abuse no more and went to the police. The cps decided there was not enough evidence, I appealed and they rejected my appeal. I had a breakdown and was in a bad place , my cpso encouraged me to appeal again as I had so much evidence ( maybe not physically) and low and behold the CPS decided to prosecute, I got a written apology from the cps, and he was found guilty.

Apparently not many decisions get overturned by the CPS and my case was used as an example for my case worker. Just shows sometimes the CPS can get it wrong.

I am 50 / 50.I think it’s great that we have organisations and help lines to help us through difficult times and I am sure those that use them find them helpful.I also think back to say 30 - 50 years ago when there was little help available that generation just seemed to get on with life no matter what it threw at them.I find it hard to imagine that someone so young and financially independent could not get through this bad period in there life.Yet someone who is not as financially independent just gets on with it.We will never know what demons possessed Caroline Flack to take her own life.RIP Caroline Flack

Yes I agree. I myself know this personally. However there’s a huge stigma attached to mental health. People are scared, I always put a front on and I’d say 1/10 people who know me know I suffer with mental health. I just don’t like being a burden. I think my actions speak louder than words , as did Caroline’s by her liking mental health posts how she acted etc.

If you ask someone if they are ok, 9/10 you expect them to say “yes” seriously are they going to say “no” not really ?

There seems to be a common misunderstanding on this thread that suicide means depression. It doesn't, in fact some studies show that over half the people who kill themselves had no diagnosable mental health condition. Suicidal ideation (thinking suicidal thoughts) is very often in response to short term situations.

Like most things in life, suicide is not as simple as we would like to think, the thought processes behind it are not simple nor are they common to all people.

Also to add Caroline Flack was only the presenter, the ant and dec of love island so to speak. She was not one of the few that the show openly exploits.

I'm not defending the show nor do I have any interest in it, but her involvement and link to the shown itself was not the same as the past contestants that were in position to be exploited by it.

Bit of trivia to lighten the mood, her first big TV gig was as Bubbles in the Michael Jackson section of Bo Selecta.

I believe that it a basic right to decide when and where to end your own life. I have contemplated it many times and I will tell you all this. It is my right. My body. My life. I will not die in poor health in a care home to be left to rot. I will go on my terms at the time of my choosing..

Money has nothing to do with happiness

To add to this, I am probably in the generation of getting on with your life whatever is thrown at you, however social media wasn't around for me until the 90's by which time I was old enough to realise there are a lot of keyboard warriors and weird people on the internet.

I have said all along, the internet is a great invention but it can also be a very cold place for many people. I know it is easy to say, but the off / delete button should be used more , especially if it was anything like what I read last night

"

. It seems we are both of a generation that can shrug our shoulders and get on with life as best we can.Yes the Internet is a great invention if used properly.Yes money doesn’t buy happiness but it can help cover the unexpected bills or in Caroline case she could have used it for the expensive CPS case that was coming up which I think she would have won anyway as the boyfriend / ex boyfriend was on her side.As I said in my earlier posting we will never know what demons possessed her to take her own life.

that would have been up to cps to decide the case and the judges she was going infront of.

if the 3 judges found she is guilty thats just with the evidence presented then they would find her guilty.

Makes no difference if her ex refused to appear in court the evidence alone would be enough to make her look guilty.

As thats what happens with many cases brought against a man in assault cases.

I'm sure I'll get crapped on from a great height for this, but it's just conjecture. How are people so sure that it was the media/press attention that caused her to take this sad action? Is it not possible that she may have actually been guilty of the attack on her partner and believed that her "celebrity" life would be over if found guilty?

Mental health has always existed. Your generation of “ shrug your shoulders and get on with it” is why there’s such a stigma with mental health. Years ago people used to say your were a witch or “mad” or “mental “. Hence why we need to raise awareness of mental health and it’s how it’s as bad and sometimes worse as a physical illness

You won’t get abuse. She was suffering for a long time from what I can gather. But sometimes it takes one thing to tip you.

"Cancel shows like love island. Jeremy Kyle was after 1 unfortunate death. That show is responsible on part for 3.

That would be the best way for her to be remembered "

Can someone tell me how Caroline Flack’s death is in any way related to Love Island?

If someone who worked at a Tesco committed suicide, would you say that all Tesco stores need to be closed?

I can’t find any logic in that point at all.

It was her job, a job which has stated - many times - she loved. She had to stand down from the show because of the legal situation she was in.

"She obviously had mental health issues to take her own life, which she managed to hide from the public and media. But how much support did she get from close friends and relatives. We all need to be more attentive to our friends and relatives as mental health issues affect everyone not just the famous.

Believe me sometimes that is still not enough, it wasn't in my personal experience, but yes, still keep an eye on your loved ones, that's all you can do "

I agree to a certain extent. Ant McPartlin was found d*unk driving he caused an accident, was he vilified like Caroline , he was a hero. But on the other hand he seeked help and was doing the right things. However Caroline never had that chance.

I think we have to very careful what we demand on a kneejerk reaction.

People demanded that the police and CPS had more powers to deal with domestic violence now people are saying what they did in this case was wrong.

We have no idea what really happened.

We can't control what other people say and do! But we can be more mindful of what we say and do.

Herts/London

I've been thinking of the Elvis Costello song, This Year's Girl:

See her picture in a thousand places 'cause she's this year's girl

You think you all own little pieces of this year's girl

Forget your fancy manners

Forget your English grammar

'Cause you don't really give a damn about this year's girl

Still you're hoping that she's well-spoken 'cause she's this year's girl

You want her broken with her mouth wide open 'cause she's this year's girl

Never knowing it's a real attraction

All these promises of satisfaction

While she's being bored to distraction being this year's girl

Time's running out, she's not happy with the cost

There'd be no doubt, only she's forgotten much more than she's lost

A bright spark might corner the market in this year's girl

You see yourself rolling on the carpet with this year's girl

Those disco synthesizers

Those daily tranquilizers

Those body-building prizes

Those bedroom alibis

All this, but no surprises for this year's girl

All this, but no surprises for this year's girl

All this, but no surprises for this year's girl, yeah

I believe its under minor assault like many assault accusations

minor assaults, where the defendant is not usually entitled to trial by jury. They are generally disposed of in magistrates' courts.

"Its really sad but unfortunately people will say things need to change and a few months down the line things we will be forgotten about and our media will move onto the next victim without regrards to someone's mental health poor girl my heart is with her family at this tragic time

Well read and sign the article for a law to be passed to make the media think twice!!

Don't worry about f&b we all know he likes cake mixture

No. Press freedom is vital. We live in a free society. "

I’m also not convinced it was them that caused her to commit suicide. If we believe what is on social media I’d have expected to see her name brought up constantly & I haven’t probably because I don’t read newspapers.

I think it had just as much to do with her being due to be sentenced in a few days. Also sad as it is she was the abuser! If I’d battered H in her sleep & then topped myself just before being sentenced how much sympathy would you have for me?

Zip, that’s how much..

The sad part is that she had issues which were not addressed by the medical professionals & she probably had them her whole life, but they can only help if you ask for it.

With regards to the press, Don’t like what you read? Then stop reading it. No law, No freedom of press changes need to be made.

Just you the reader or hopefully ex reader ??

I think it was one thing after another, she apparently said that she didn't get any support from itv after she left.

I've also read she was going to make a statement about press invasion but was advised not to because of her impending trail.

She committed suicide when her friend who was staying with her popped to the shop. How awful is that?

So would I be right in saying that your putting a cost on someones right to justice.

cost shouldnt be above the right to justice who ever you are poor or rich

everyone should have the right to a jury court than sat infront of a panel of 3 judges that could have had a bad day

a magistraites court is known by many guilty before you even step into that court room

"The issue you might have is that celebrities tend to rely on the press to keep them relevant, if the press is restricted, this will also have an impact on their careers. They also tend to love the press if they are on their 'side', but then want the press restricted in other things. They can't really have it both ways. "

"A query here have you dealt with or tried to deal with a magistraites court to elect to a crown case instead of a magistraites court

cps actively block the transfer to the crown court unless deemed serious enough

Because of cost and do it should be..

So would I be right in saying that your putting a cost on someones right to justice.

cost shouldnt be above the right to justice who ever you are poor or rich

So you don't get a fair hearing at magistrates?

Lovely sentiment but who pays.. we can't afford it

"I'm sure I'll get crapped on from a great height for this, but it's just conjecture. How are people so sure that it was the media/press attention that caused her to take this sad action? Is it not possible that she may have actually been guilty of the attack on her partner and believed that her "celebrity" life would be over if found guilty?

Because people seem to blame the media or internet for anything at the moment.

Yes they do, the same people who are saying the media are to blame have sent Dan Wotton (editor of the sun) vile messages on twitter telling him he should be ashamed of himself and should die.

People need to start taking responsibility for their own actions.

The amount of abuse I saw last night aimed at people because of this while saying " be kind" at the end of the sentence. They don't realise the irony

Couldn't agree more

Yes there was "

You don’t sit infront of 3 judges ! You have one judge one jury. Jury decides on guilty or not. Judge passes sentence. Judge can influence

The vast majority of people in court are found guilty.

There is a reason for this..

They are guilty..

Criminal elements in the main moan about the justice system.

I have never been spoken to by a policeman. I obey the law.. Simples..

The legal system, a sliding scale of offences and potential sentences and fines dictate which cases are held in which court.

Lay Magistrates are ordinary people doing their civic duty. There are 3 of them to ensure a majority verdict and to prevent one person holding the power or ‘having a bad day’. They are advised legally by a clerk of court to ensure their actions and decision making is within the parameters of law. If you think they are bent why not apply to become one?

If you are found guilty in a Magistrate’s court your right of appeal would be escalated to Crown court. It can take months, or even years to get a case to Crown thereby causing even further delays and emotional upheaval when not necessary. If you lose there too then good luck paying court costs.

The Sun have deleted numerous articles about her today. The daily mail prior to her death had published 25 articles about her this year. That's 25 articles in 45 days, more than 1 article every other day.

Her family, having just found out that she was dead got a solicitor to warn the press off asking them not to contact or photograph them which is way beyond the normal 'respect our privacy' type statement issued through the police. They also incredibly early put it out their thst this was suicide which to me was to stop the speculation from the tabloids.

Yes there was a lot going on but its naive to think that the press intrusion wasnt a factor

in our local paper there’s an article on suicide and how it’s increasing every year between certain age groups and genders mainly men under 40 are the highest rates and one thing that stands out is the majority of cases the deceased where regularly taking drugs like cocaine

As you say it’s men under 40 who are drug users. 5000 in 2018 were men out of say close to 7000 so are you saying the majority were drug users. ?

But all they are really talking about is whether to blame the press or the CPS when a famous, beautiful person tops themselves. They are not talking about why everyday people, mostly young men are committing suicide at record numbers.
