I realise that this is not exactly the right forum but we want to reach as wide a range of people as possible to get an answer.

We are thinking of having a week in the maldives in one of those pods on stilts in the sea. We've heard that as a muslim country you have to be quite modest and no topless or nude sunbathing.

Anyone give us some guidance in this respect..is it the same in a resort or can the girls

at least wear a bikini or at least go topless!

In a resort you can wear what you normally would on a beach holiday although I believe topless sunbathing woukdnt be encouraged. It's only on the mainland and on the non resort islands you would need to cover up

Yes you need a bikini top or a swimsuit.

Some islands don't allow alcohol.

It’s the same as pretty much everywhere. Beaches owned by resorts have their own policy, public beaches are a no no.

Whatvabout clothing outside the resort?

Can short skirts or skimpy tops be worn or is it all shoulders covered?

" Beaches owned by resorts have their own policy, public beaches are a no no. "

In Mauritius topless sunbathing is banned even around the pools in the hotels.

I think if you are going to go to a muslim country you should respect their culture. I've not been to the Maldives but certainly when I was in the Gambia youd see people out and about in bikini tops and it just seems massively disrespectful. I can't imagine anyone would say anything let alone do anything but I guess it depends on how you want to be perceived and how you want to interact with the locals.

Swimwear is fine... no need to cover up

I saw loads of people topless in Mauritius on the beach and by the pool.

I would never disrespect the local laws personally.

In the Maldives bikinis are fine on the beach and resort. Go of them then cover up.

My hotel in Belle Mare, Mauritius didn't allow it. There were notices saying it would offend local people.

I was at Le Morne there were notices all over the place. Think it was mostly French people who did it.

You don't really go out of a resort as the resorts themselves are islands. If you were to take a trip to the capital Male then you would be advised to cover shoulders and not wear skimpy clothing

Barton upon Humber

Also illegal to take naughty pictures or videos, if they started checking cameras, I think many would be in trouble.

Its probably a destination to avoid for westerners right now but if you do go then cover up when out of the hotels.
