When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Has anyone else got any views on this" Theres also the lupercalia feast celebrated by the Roman's to plea the gods where they would strip a goat of its hides and slap all the single woman with it, marking them with its blood, to aid in their fertility and their crops fertility, over the next year but the church stopped that because it was a pagan tradition. So they settled on the 14th. I believe one of the earliest known valentine greetings is still on display in the British Library. | |||
