Yeah, so, I was just thinking about interesting finds.

When I bought my house, 5 years ago, I red did the landscaping because the people who lived here before allowed s, brambles, rose bushes, etc completely take over.

I rotavated the whole lot, flattened it and metal detected it. I found a lot of coins! They were all around 10-20cm deep and scattered.

There was a few sqm which I didn't metal detect at the very start - I bought a skip and skipped it. I really should have detected it first, but I didn't realise how many coins would have been in my gardens.

Anyway, when I did the detection, I found around 20 or so, the oldest one was from 1899 or so.

What about you? What have you found?

Gloucestershire

Not really the same. But, we used to have a small area of wood attached to the back of our (near vertical) garden that I used to mess around in as a kid.

Found loads of really old beer bottles and things up there. Not sure what era, but interesting none the less.

Cannock

Found a medieval child's shoe embedded in the wall of my parents old farmhouse in Devon.

Also found an ornamental "hinge" from Roman segmented body armour.

Both now in museums

Ruislip

An aunt and uncle of mine had somebody drive into the low wall of their front garden causing quite a lot of damage to it.

The driver evidently decided to try and get away without owning up and drove off.

When my aunt and uncle went down to investigate the damage, they found the car's front number plate attached to the wall.

Bought a house that needed total renovation and the old boy who had lived there was a bit of a local eccentric. He had no family and the solicitors didn't bother to clear the the house. I noticed all the curtains had discs sewn in the bottom of them. My mum said oh there weights .. I thought I would check....turns out they were gold full sovereign coins...

Plenty of neolithic and mesolithic stone tools

Iron age pottery

Roman pottery and coins

Medieval rubbish and the occasional skeleton.

The fun of being an archaeologist in the UK
