Chelmsford

A young lady has been jailed for trying to open the aircraft door midflight. 2 yearssentence.

Obviously I know they can be opened in an emergency but does anyone know if they locked until needed or if anyone can open one mid flight.?

I believe air pressure differences would preclude anyone for being physically able to open one mid flight.

The differences in pressure would make it almost impossible at high altitudes, but there are safety catches to stop them being opened 'accidently'.

To a degree the doors are "locked" rather dead bolt but yes the air pressure will make it meer impossible to open by hand..

There is over seven tons of pressure on the door. It is impossible to open when above 10,000 feet. There is just one handle on Boeing anyway that you rotate on the ground.

Total waste of our (taxpayers) money. She was non-violent and in reality not much of a threat. Keeping her in jail will cost on the region of £ 1000 per week. Should she be punished, yes of course but there have to be much more cost effective ways of doing that. Have to keep the prison population up some how or another. WE have WAY too many people in jail, this is an example of someone who should NOT be there.

The way the door is designed it pushes into the frame of the aircraft. So the pressure forces it into the fuselage.

The doors form a "plug", fitting into the doorway opening. The higher the air pressure differential, the more firmly the door will be held in place.

well I’m a taxpayer it doesn’t bother me one bit that some of it goes to fund the prisons and hows it a waste of taxpayers money she broke the law simple as that and she’s paid a hefty price btw what about the 80 k that was spent on two raf jets that escorted the plane back if I was the judge I’d of give her longer I’ve noticed over the last 15 years of flying that d*unken behaviour on planes is getting worse hen party’s /stag party’s so fair play to the judge in dishing out a good sentence

Sorry for being a bit dim but I thought,as you climb the atmosphere pressure drops and they increase the pressure inside.

I'm now imagining all sorts of scenarios but the thought that some idiot would actually interfere with the doors had never occurred to me before.

Aircraft doors open inwards initially, so that the higher pressure inside the cabin effectively makes them like a plug. That higher pressure then makes it impossible for a human to pull them open.

I would think, in practice she will serve around six to eight months.

I do not "work over", am retired but do pay some income tax. Plus VAT and other taxes....

Having read about her she sounds like an absolute nightmare, screaming at the other passengers she was going to kill them all while attempting to get the door open and assaulting the crew. She'll have plenty of time to repent and hopefully get the help she needs to sort her behaviour out in jail

Don't worry Naasty Knix. Firstly the doors are controlled on the flight deck. You will hear the pilot saying "doors to manual" when you land; that means that the flight deck has unlocked the door.

Physics also ensures that differential air pressure seals the door to the fuselage.

Well, I'm a tax payer too and I'm quite happy to know that some of that tax money goes towards protecting us all from dangerous idiots and other criminals.

Having a screaming fit/temper tantrum on an aircraft is a dangerous and violent activity whether anyone was hurt or not and it should be discouraged.

Entirely agree. I’d have gone for some sort of large amount of community work and an extensive ban on flying/entering any UK airport.

Also, I'm pretty sure one side cannot be opened without the other door on the opposing side being opened. I've always seem to remember 2 stewardesses having to lock each door simultaneously.

Depends on the aircraft type. Alot of Boeing aircraft, 747 and 777 open like this but Airbus 319, 320 and 321 don't.

Anyone d*unk on a plane should have their passport revoked for a number of years. Might make people think twice about getting abdolutely plastered in the airport.

I also think the airports need to play a part here. I like a drink or two before I get on a flight but I've seen bar staff still serving drinks to people who have clearly had enough.

Staff at the gate should also be refusing boarding to these people.

I'm pretty sure that strict rules are already in place but they're just not enforced enough.

If people knew they would be refused boarding or have their passport confiscated they would control their own drinking.

Totally agree with this. Airport staff and airline staff should be responsible for travellers being safe and stop the d*unks boarding.

Punishment fitting the crime:

- revoke passport for a period

- curfew to prevent alcohol misuse in public places on basis that she has evidenced an inability to behave appropriately with drink

- as the issue was linked to air travel, community service litter picking round an airport, clearing up empty alcohol and holiday paraphernalia that she herself cant enjoy.

Total waste of our (taxpayers) money. She was non-violent and in reality not much of a threat. Keeping her in jail will cost on the region of £ 1000 per week. Should she be punished, yes of course but there have to be much more cost effective ways of doing that. Have to keep the prison population up some how or another. WE have WAY too many people in jail, this is an example of someone who should NOT be there.

Off on a tangent but we lost the door off a helicopter. They slide back like a van and when the crewman reached for it to close, it wasn't there anymore. Somewhere over Brum. Never been found!

Ha! I used to fly helicopters, and we often took the doors off in hot weather. Putting in a steep banked turn while looking down 2000 feet to the ground was quite distracting.

A mate drooped a screwdriver out over Farnborough. We scanned the papers next day for any mysterious deaths.
