So that's how many times you would have to use it to offset the carbon footprint and justify it over a plastic one.

A little disheartening to hear

If that is true it just demonstrates how absurd this whole carbon footprin my thing is. 149 plastic bags that will never decompose, just disintegrate over hundreds of years to end up as minute particles of plastic in the food chain is somehow better than a cotton bag that will decompose and fully integrate within a short time?

Not really taking in the whole picture though. Single use plastic bags are much cheaper and have a smaller carbon footprint than a cotton bag, but the cotton doesn't have the environmental impact at end of life. The carbon can be offset (by planting trees for example). The plastic bags for life have a much smaller carbon footprint than cotton, and much less of an impact than single use.

So the bread I buy, wrapped in plastic, and the milk container is also plastic (but I can recycle), the cheese is wrapped in plastic, the muffins are in plastic, the margarine is in a plastic tub, the two frozen pizzas are wrapped in plastic inside of a cardboard box, as well as the yogurt and sour cream are in plastic and let's not forget the cereal is in a plastic bag that isnt resealable.

Yet I gotta put it all in a reusable bag that I also had to buy and then go buy plastic poop bags for my dog.

Makes sense.

This isn't meant to take away from how bad plastic is, but I also had no idea how much more carbon footprint is created when making a cotton bag over a plastic one.

Doesn't matter about all that, just make sure you don't throw away your carrier bags please

I've probably used my cotton bag that my mum made from cotton that was previously a chair cover or something, more than 150 times. It's hideous, I wish the darn thing would wear out .

It's a start, we've got to start somewhere.

over there by that tree

The whole war on plastic bags is ridiculous...

Especially now the biodegradable ones - compost down quicker than ever!

Instead of using free ones from the supermarkets for bin bags like the majority of us did I’m now buying bags quicker than I ever used them before... I’d love to see the stat showing how many bags on a roll are now sold in the UK.

I’d bet that plastic bag usage hasn’t actually changed that much at all.

To class a bag as single use plastic is just giving the eco nazis a platform to shout from - as for the upcoming hate for the takeaway containers, I bet nearly all of us has a stack of them in the kitchen being used for all manner of things!

Don’t get me wrong there will always be wasteful people and that will never change, but to demonise the whole population as uncaring buffoons is just wrong on so many levels...

Single use my arse....

(Sorry thought it was rant day today!)

Hiding from twats

Cotton is a particularly bad textile when it comes to environmentally friendliness. The amounts of water needed to irrigate the crops is just insane, never mind anything else. Hemp in comparison is incredible with a very very low carbon footprint. I'd love to see it being used more widely.

I have a friend who regularly publishes articles on microplastic pollution, and I've done a bit of research on it myself, there are so many more issues surrounding plastics than most people are aware of. They're just so bloody convenient though

Instead of all moaning about it, if people give a shit they should reduce the plastic they buy. Milkman, solid soap, shampoo and conditioner, take a box and get cheese from the counter. Things in tins and boxes. It doesn't have to be hard.

My aim is to only have my waste bin emptied once this year.

Fair enough I live on my own.

But I'm sure I'll do it. It just takes a bit of effort (but not that much really)

It doesn't break down into micro plastic so who cares?
