So you've been given 5 years to live

So you've been to the Doctors and told you've got 5 years to live, but this can be reduced by significant chunks of time if you take risks that need ANY further medical intervention but form a huge part of the enjoyment of life.

In turn, you can extend your life if you take up unremarkable pursuits that are totally safe, un-challenging and a departure from the real you, but you obviously are around longer for friends and family.

What do you do?

I'd rather live a shorter time as the authentic me.

I don't have kids though, so can be as selfish as I please over the decision!

When my dad found out his lung cancer was terminal he was given a 6 month timescale, but was told if he quit smoking his chance of making it to 2 years improved by 50%.

He didn't quit smoking.

A bit to close to home for us. Make the most of every day, travel, create memories

When you know you don't have a lot of time left you mostly want as much of that time as possible.

I’d do what I needed to do to extend the time as much a possible.

I’d quite like to not be dead and take my daughter to her first day of school.

I would have to go out with a bang. My family would understand. I have no kids or significant other so I'd spend whatever time I had left making short term memories. Rather than wallow in decline I would much prefer to keep active and stay upbeat about the whole situation as best I could.

Derby

I've already planned for this.

Sell the house, cash in everything I can and blow the whole lot travelling the world and experiencing as much as i can while saving a little bit for going out when i choose to in the way i choose to.

Honestly my end would be very bloody and messy but will bethe biggest scariest rush possible and take a couple of minutes to do...a no parachute jump from 15000feet

I reckon i could go for a year and not have a day with nothing to do before I run out of money.

Sorry to hear this. But entirely support your thoughts and feel your pain. Hope you can realise your hopes with this situation.

Same as my Grandad... his words ‘if I going I might as well do it whilst enjoying my scotch, cigs and nights with friends and family’

I think it’s a hard one OP, I’d like to think I’d try and do some things a bit out there which always to scared to do. But on the other hand, more time with my lad and friends creating happy memories is more likely.

You never know until you have to face it
