Good for him and he’s very lucky he has such a supporting wife and family when others don’t.

Somewhere near here

I feel it must have been an incredibly hard thing to say after being married for so long to a woman, and to have children with her, makes me wonder how long he’s possibly suppressed his feelings. However, I find it sad that it had to be announced to the world. It’s his personal life, no one has had to announce they’re straight with a statement to the press

If it is genuinely true, then good luck to him

But I wonder how long the wife has known for, or if it's an almighty shock and the last 27byears have been a sham

And, call me plain old Mr Cynical, but it's odd that he announces this now, when there are almost daily reports of how he's a megalomaniac behind the scenes and almost everyone else on Good Morning hates his guts.

Smacks of attention diverting, and a bit like Barrymore's constant "poor me" act

I think that's a bit disingenuous. No one said he 'looked' gay. I have to say the announcement doesn't surprise me. And you know I am sure as well as me sometimes an intuition doesn't have to be based on looks. It doesn't even have to be based on anything definable or specific.

Sorry you think its disingenuous. But she says it was "obvious" that he was gay. What exactly does that mean? Are there certain gay features or mannerisms that define them that way? Or is it all based on stereotype. Gay men come in all shapes and sizes you know.

We all have a different slant on these things..

Firstly, I was more surprised he had a wife and two daughters and had always assumed he was gay..call it instinct if you like..

Secondly, I feel more for his wife and two daughters than I do for him.

Why do people feel 'SORRY' for anyone?

I see a happy man with a happy family. He's had a good career. Amassed quite a good small fortune. He's intelligent and loved. His children are educated. They love his as he loves them. His wife will be fulfilled in many aspect of her life and probably was sexually too ! I'm sure if a 'gay' bloke gave me a good seeing to his tackle would work as good as anyones. There's more to marriage than bloody sex. They seem like decent , loyal people.

He hasn't deceived her to my knowledge.

Being gay is neither shocking , unusual or a crime.

It's just that at this point in his life he decided he want's to be honest to himself and it will probably add to the myriad of stories that enable us to understand the complexities of sex and sexual relationships.

Surely we must be nearing the pulling down of the proverbial fucking pigeon holes that are stereo types.

His is NOT a sad story.

I'm not entirely surprised. About 15 years ago I was out in London for a drink with the Mrs. I think the bar was called "The Joy Boy Cellar of Lust" or something similar. My mrs has gone for a slash and I'm standing at the bar in my red pvc cat suit. Well who strolls over.. yes the silver fox that is Phil... wearing leather chaps, biker boots and one of Hollies corsets. He asks do you want to dance big boy.. at this point my Mrs comes back and he looks shocked and runs off. After that I was always a bit 50/50 if he was or not.

I'm glad he's had the courage to come out and hope it helps others to live their lives openly. X

"I'm not entirely surprised.

What does 'beard' mean ?

I’m glad you asked that

Is that knowingly and unknowingly?

I think it's knowingly. Which wouldn't make Philip Schofields wife a beard

Here and There

We don’t know what has been going on behind closed doors, but unless his Mrs went into the marriage knowing he was Gay and has spent the past 27 years being perfectly happy in that knowledge then I do feel sorry her. I’d be surprised if this is what she set out for all those years ago.

Must be a huge relief to him though and I hope everyone involved is genuinely ok.

It might just be a mid life crisis phase he's going through

I’m not sure what the point of this was, he’s married and has the support of his wife which presumably means they are going to stay together.

If that’s the case unless he’s a swinger then he won’t be fucking anyone else be they women or men.

So what’s it got to do with anyone else

Being in the public eye and the tabloids complete lack of morals, I imagine he weighed up "owning" it himself against his family and friends potentially being pestered/insulted/disregarded while they try and sell a few copies of their respective rags.

I doubt he feels it newsworthy in the regard that everyone 'needs' to know it's just a rather sad reality that a person in that kind of position can never truly be left alone.

Not too shocked by this news to be honest, have always felt he had a slight camp nature, like so many males in the entertainment business who are all so bubbly on stage, screen,in public,Ryan Clarke Neal,Barrymore,David Walliams, etc etc,but campness doesn't define sexual orientation

Well done to him for releasing his true feelings, which would do more harm to himself than coming out with this news

Why doesn’t he come out as being bisexual? Being gay is much more acceptable but he’s had sexual relationships with a woman so surely he’s bisexual!

Being bi isn’t as socially acceptable perhaps.

As a man I often struggle to shed a tear. Sometimes I want to have a good cry but just can’t. Maybe it’s my upbringing telling me not to cry. However watching Phillip on TV this morning had me in tears. Very brave of him to come out like that, and the outpouring of support shows how much he is loved. I just hope Phillip’s wife has a great support network too because I can’t imagine how she must feel.

Absolutely this. I can understand that his announcement would be of interest to many but to be the main lead story on the news was staggering. We still have such a long way to go when "man announces he is gay" is a bigger story than the corona virus or the sex abuse doctor.

Totally agree. Great for him, but why does it have to be headline news.

I don't think I've ever seen a news item where a celebrity has come out as being straight"

It’s a deflection tactic due to his ‘alleged’ bullying of co-presenters and his declining popularity with his viewers.

I always just thought he was gay. Didn't make any difference, he's a lovely man.

The shock I felt was finding out he was married with children and only just coming out.

I feel sad for him that he's felt he's had to live his life to suit his social standing but I'm sure he still had a very loving relationship with his wife and has children because he lived his life this way.

Still, who cares. We all deserve to be happy. He's only got the last bit of his life left. He should be able to spend that as he feels fit. Without judgement. Live and let live.

Yeah I’ve always had the impression he was gay to be honest, I think unfortunately for him being in the spotlight it’s probably been a difficult decision ref his career, i hate to be a pessimist but I think it was probably a case of jump before you are pushed!

Was he possibly going to be exposed?

Hmmm thoughts?

Côte d'Azur & Great Yarmouth

Jeez, it's a bit like Denzel Washington going on national TV and saying: "Hey guys, I've got a little secret to share with you.... you never realized it, but I'm black!"

The "z" by the way, is for anybody who also hadn't guessed DW was American

"Feel sorry for his wife and kids. Not him

"

Well said
