Happiness Triggers

surrounded by twinkly lights

I am a geek and chemistry is one of my passions. When I go thrill seeking I am aware of certain things that I have to put in place in order to not drop too low in endorphins when the thrill is over, so my mental health does not suffer.

So I plan my happiness triggers, lots of little things that I know will release the required flow of endorphins to coast me along.

A long cuddle with a friend is especially good...

What do you do to make yourself happy when you are low, how to turn that frown upside down

I listen to music in the car on my way to see friends. Music can change any mood I'm in at the sound of an opening chord or a lyric or 2. Failing that, I drive with either take my mind of a mood or cheer me up altogether, and failing that...my friends will give me a ripping for being down and before long I'll be a happy chappy once again

Music is very powerful, do you have a certain type of music you go to every time?

I have a playlist I go to just. Actually, i would usually give the radio a chance first and failing that I have a playlist of about 400 songs that i really like to I'll just stick that on random. Music is incredibly powerful, you dont even have to have a memorable experience even for you to be mentally transported somewhere else if a certain song plays. Saying that, a lot of the songs on my playlist make me think of the movies they have featured in

And that releases more endorphins as you have a visual aid as well as a sound one

Exactly like my favourite song, Jackie Wilson - Higher and Higher, makes me think of the Ghost Busters movie where they conver things in the psychoactive slime and play that music to bring the statue of liberty alive to help them save New York

I listen to music. Especially modern latin music.

I go for a walk. Longer the better.

Watch a cheesy romantic comedy film.

Long soak in a bubble bath with a magazine and face pack on.

On a mooch

If I can’t see friends in person, a quick message exchange normally has me smiling or laughing. Or just spending fine with my lad.

If I don’t wish to interact, I’ll walk to my quiet place in the hustle of London, or read, draw, listen to music, or just remembering the daftness of my paternal grandparents and their antics, always gets me smiling.

Hugs are good, although difficult to come by.

Music almost always works, I’ve got a playlist that I’ve lovingly created which has songs either special or just plain awesome.

I’ve never found exercise or getting outdoors to really help much, it just makes me wish I had someone to share it with. Just proves that there’s no such thing as a fix that works for everyone.

Seeing a good friend works well. The close ones are elusive but they’re priceless

At the end of a work day when everything is silent and I'm just enjoying time with my animals always brings me a feeling of happiness and peace

Drawing is another strong endorphin trigger

Another strong trigger, this is why pets as therapy are so important

In the Bdsm scene its called "sub drop" and I know it like I know my own face. Music, yoga, really any nice, peaceful distraction. I often spend a lot of time watching animal clips on Zuckerbook. I've got a favourite one that involves an elephant, a pumpkin and a totally cool bloke from Somerset who says "a girt big'un". It makes me giggle with joy every time

Oh wow... yes "sub drop" is a fascinating subject to me and the triggers that work with the extreme low

I suppose it depends on the depth of the drop (and we get into mental health stuff here I suppose). I make sure I'm safe and secure first, securing against depression, anxiety, etc. Grounding techniques, mindfulness, CBT-esque techniques (the psychological therapy, not ball busting). I try to find appropriate people to talk to. Long hot shower.

Once I'm in a position of ordinary unhappiness (or on the way there), talking to people, music, exercise, helping others, triggering amusing memories. Throwing myself into an outlet (for me writing). Playing with makeup. Reading if my concentration's OK (see mental health).

It gets easier over time, I guess your body gets used to the roller-coaster. Twelve years ago when I first started being spanked it'd hit me like a left hook from Rocky. These days I still get that drained feeling but don't feel so vulnerable and emotional. Or maybe just anticipating it neutralises it a bit. It's interesting for sure
