Well I was small in at 16 and had a bit of a late growth spurt ... he was my best friend ... I made him feel like a piece of shit to be honest... I wouldn’t have done anything else to be honest. But it happens ... it was in my Navy basic training and he used me to deflect all the shit away from himself ... sad twat

You've got to be thick skinned in the army, one of the reasons I didn't join until later was that as an 18 year old who was quite sensitive at the time and had already had periods of bullying at school I was scared it would be much worse in the forces. There is a lot of over the top offensive banter, and there are some nasty NCO's and 'alpha male' types in there who can be very hard on poorly performing junior ranks or people that for whatever reason just aren't fitting in with the rest of their unit. It's far better than it used to be when you talk to older troops who joined in the 80's and 90's though. I really enjoy being in and as a thick skinned grown man I've taken well to it, and the piss taking, shouting and beastings just bounce off me with a smile, but I know as a teenager I would have struggled.

As a vertran myself who served in the early 00s I can definitely say you learnt how to take a joke. Everyone got ribbed that's just how it was but I never experienced outright bullying.

It's that type of attitude that permuts the aceptability of obscene behaviour towards others as well as denigrating men to be expected to be tough and not to have emotiond etc.

Totally disgusting. There is no place in society for people to be expected to suffer became of others lack of good moral standing and respect for others .

Alot of the behavior is to see if you've got what it takes to keep you cool under intense pressure and still make rational decisions.

Panic rooms - like the one in kingsman are real & even cadets used to be subject to them. Ours was simulating a sinking ship & you had to stop the water getting in, it went almost to the roof before we managed it. Team building & problem solving again under pressure.

A war zone or enemy interrogation is not gonna take it easy on you just because you feel that it's all being taken out on you.

Army is gonna be goosed by the time this next generation comes up with the whole "can't shout at kids, can't smack & can't force them to do chores, school or homework cod it's abuse" every where in today's society.

Never mind the increase that alot of these kids are having with severe mental health issues & they ain't even out of school.

Saying that they'll think they are playing COD or fortnight when they are actually controlling real drones.

Walking down the only road I've ever known!

I joined in 79 during a time when there was a major investigation going on about bullying recruits.

Training was tough then, but I never felt I was being bullied. The NCO's have a job to do and that is to bring the best out of you, be self sufficient and confident and able to stand in your own two feet, accept orders and get on with the task.

I still follow those same principles today.

So if that's bullying then I'm a victim of today's snowflake society.

My grampy made it clear i shouldn’t join the Army because of the bullying that goes on.

Obviously it goes on within all branches of the Armed Forces, but he was very vocal and adamant that the Army would not be for me. I’m assuming he either experienced it or saw it himself when he served.

I served 8 years and paid £250 to buy myself out because I was bullied by a dick of a Sergeant. I still hate him all these years later

Theres a difference of learning troops to be tough for war and actually being bullied xx

Have I seen bullying? Yes of course I have.

Is it rife? Absolutely not!

It did used to be more widespread when I 1st joined, but any bullying I saw was always nipped in the bud early.

Because that's what good people do. They don't allow it.

Bullying happens in every job & walk of life, not just the military.

It happens much less nowadays.

People are much more likely to talk out about things these days.

That's because naturally, people who have seen the effect bullying has on people, progress through the ranks and are better at spotting it.

Due to the nature if the job, your mental robustness must be tested, and there is a fine line between that a bullying.

That's where your peers and seniors step in and stop it ASAP.

I can only comment on what I've seen, but 20 years is a long time to see many things.

I can count on 1 hand the amount of bullying I've seen.

I think it's down to the stories of bullying being put in the public domain, to show that the military will not tolerate it, that makes people feel like it's rife.

My experience too. It just needs someone to exercise a bit of moral courage to sort it out, and that’s far more common than the press would have you believe and at all ranks.

Bullying never - Hazing definitely.... /s

I saw some shocking things especially from the RIC when I was in the Falklands, took a beating at one point as I stood up for a mate.

One of my closest mates was bullied out of the service for his personal lifestyle choices away from “work” - even though the brass ordered everyone to leave him be, it continued until he just PVR’d, was gutted as he was given immediate release while I was in Canada.
