TV Licence

There is talk of decriminalising the offence of not having a TV licence so you can't go to jail for not having one and it would be a civil offence similar to parking ticket offence.

I am not sure they have thought this through but I imagine millions will stop buying a new licence virtually overnight. What do you think ?

PS I don't think you should have to have a licence if you don't watch BBC

Amazon pay as you view

Sky monthly subscription

Virgin tv same

Why should I pay for a tv license as well?

Either BBC do adverts or you only pay to watch BBC ( see how that works, Not!!)

Dont have TV so doesn't affect me. I do have to confirm every 2 years this is the case and they send an officer to check.

Pretty ridiculous imo. If I were to ever subscribe to TV again I think the cost attributed to these packages should take up the element of a license to air.

I dont think we should have to get a license for 1 channel that you can get while paying out a subscription for things like sky etc. Its a stealth tax as bbc is state television really when think about it.

Not had a licence now for 7+yrs, tons of letters and dozens of visits. Don't sign anything and most importantly, never give your name.

They dress to 'look' official but have no powers at all. Unless accompanied by warrant...

They use clever tactics to gain entry and well worded letters to put the woollies up you.

There are a few Facebook group that will tell you the same.

I've never had a TV license and I don't see the point in having one. For a few years they would send letters and send someone round to check my setup. I ignored the letters and don't allow any strangers into my house. They eventually stopped being stupid.

The BBC also provide a lot of radio stations (local and national) - how would these be funded? Pay to listen? That said there are probably millions that already listen that don't have a TV so don't have a TV licence.

Scrapping the licence could get very complicated.

BBC TV would love to be released from licence fee shackles, as a premium global brand it would bloom if allowed to pull in external money.

Radio would quickly whither and die, a great loss to small groups but as is the way these days, the masses are always right.

The internet service would be quickly hollowed out and swamped by the American centric Mega businesses

But those who gain from its existence but do not want to pay a fair price for it will undermine it and then leave the mess for the generations that follow.

Lordy - After reading this thread, I am going to stick my neck out and say I'm more than happy to pay for my TV licence and I think the BBC is good value for money! £154.50 per year for BBC1, BBC2, their website, national/local radio etc.

From the TV licence website: "Part of the fee also contributes to the UK broadband rollout, funding local TV channels and S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, as was agreed with the government as part of the 2010 licence fee settlement."

So not maybe not bad value after all...?

Sport we go to the pub, no sky and no freeview but yes to streaming services, which tvl is not needed..
