Northern food that is weird to southerners

Delightful Bliss

I probably don't need enlightenment on this subject, but I am a glutton for punishment and incredibly nosy so if any lovely northerners would be so kind to post what "normal food combos" they enjoy a gazillion miles from the south

What I liked on occasion when I lived in Leeds was that practically every chippy did battered chocolate, from creme eggs, mint aeros, Mars bars, snickers, list goes on

It was a nice albeit sickly treat in the 2 years I lived there I tried the creme egg, snickers (was delicious just don't go for kingsize bar), Mars bar.

I had a Geordie stottie in Newcastle last year.

A large white bread gap, with a meat stew on it.

It was quite bland,but hearty.

There are other additives to it. To make them a bit more cosmopolitan.

Having shit loads of garlic mayo on your chips.

Basically up north we have like 101 options of hot and cold sauces for chips. Southerners don't seem to be able to understand the hot bbq sauce you can get on your chips up north.

Also deep frying everything.

There's a guy who does yt videos

Dazza his slogan is " does it fry?" And he tries frying everything at the request of his viewers. It's rather funny.

You'd like Carr's pasties from Bolton.

Chris Evans gets them delivered en masse when he's having a party. Lots of people round here have them delivered for the food at a big function.

There called barms, because they are "oven bottom barms". Mr Warburton says it's so, so it's true! And he should know.

One thing I love about the UK is for how small it is, you can drive a half hour and they will tell you that's not how you do a proper fish and chips this is the proper way to do it and it's all good to me.

(And gravy on chips is awsome.)

Chips and gravy = lovely, chips and curry sauce even better, can't beat chippy gravy when it's nice and thick and almost lumpy

I’ve read the thread. I’m gonna have to debunk a few.

Chips and sauce is a thing in cardiff.

Chips, cheese and gravy is basically poutine.

Chip shops sell battered hamburgers, why? I’m not sure.

I went to Blackpool once and discovered cheese on toast with a poached egg on top. This blew my mind

Hull

No-one has mentioned Pattie's - these seem particular to Hull and the East Riding.

Brilliant with Chips, Gravy or Curry Sauce, topped off with Chip Spice ("invented" in Hull!).

From Scotland-

Scotch Pies (some Morrisons branches in England sell them). Usually in Scotland, they come as a Pie Supper at the local chippie.

Lorne Sausage - square sausage meet, cooked with or without Batter. (Iceland stores sell it).

Plain bread. Not the stuff that's sold throughout the rest of the UK, which is known as a Pan loaf in Scotland.

Plain bread is rectangular, with a thick "heel" or slice at each end of the loaf. These "heels" have thick crusty edges top & bottom. When toasted with lashings of butter and a filling of choice, they're almost a meal in itself.
