"The 'ban' that was introduced for 2040 by Theresa May's government only applied to new vehicle sales. Boris has simply brought it forward by 5 years. He is not (currently) planning on banning petrol and diesel cars from the roads, so those of us who don't buy new can enjoy choking the planet for a few more years" but thats what I mean. No more new cars..which means older ones will rocket in price. I dont want a crappy electric car... for a start they arent even better for the wider environment. It's just a ploy... I know it's only a ban on new cars but that means no more nice new cars with gorgeous sounding engines etc

Ships in general are huge polluters, but I’m not sure just 6 are " Seems to be different numbers online more than 6 actually. Has been estimated that just one of these container ships, the length of around six football pitches, can produce the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars. The emissions from 15 of these mega-ships match those from all the cars in the world. And if the shipping industry were a country, it would be ranked between Germany and Japan as the sixth-largest contributor to global CO2 emissions.

But electric cars have only been here about 8 years. Give it investment and time and things will get better. So sorry but yes its possible." I dont think it will though. The national grid is already struggling apparently and we are being asked to reduce our load on it. So how does forcing people to have electric cars help that x

"Petrol and diesel vehicle ban brought forward to 2035 including Hybrid Cars will this be "The end of Tourism"" It’s not sustainable - where’s all the power going to come from for all these electric vehicles? Hybridised engines are very good. Petrol engines can be waaaayyy more efficient than currently made. Diesel isn’t also as bad and dirty as people think. How on earth people think the infrastructure for all electric will be there in 15 years, I don’t know.

"I'm just wondering when we have to go back to living in caves and wearing woad This should have a similar effect on the global economy. Btw I have no objection to reducing carbon emissions but read recently about a man driving from York to London in an electric vehicle. With all the recharging stops it took him 2 weeks. The stagecoach was quicker back in the days of Dick Turpin! Poor bloody horses.... " I watched an online test by Carwow recently where they drove about half a dozen of the current crop of ev's from just outside London, north on a single charge until their batteries died. Even the poorest of them managed 196 miles before it died, and the Tesla made it as far as Newcastle, which is 270 miles. The distance from the start of the M1 in London, to York, is 202 miles, so all bar one of them would have made the journey in a single charge, and even the Merc that didn't would have reached the outskirts. I'm not taking sides here, but deliberately exaggerating the range deficiencies of current electric vehicles is a rather futile gesture and there are another fifteen years of development before the government deadline. I'm more concerned with the policy of forcing private cars off the road, and in particular, poorer drivers and families, than I am about the death of the IC engine, because that will happen eventually anyway. It's called progress and you can't stand in it's way. Remember CRT's anyone? Here's a link to the video if anyone wants to watch it for themselves. https://youtu.be/ZH7V2tU3iFc

"Just more Government sound bites. It won't happen simple." I think it's more down to economics than the government. The big carmakers are now heavily investing in EV's and if they become cheap enough and range efficient enough then more and more people will buy them voluntarily. The charging infrastructure is woeful at the moment, but it will improve as more people invest in Ev's, so unless something radical comes along in the meantime, I think EV's will be far outselling ICE cars by the deadline anyway.

"Hydrogen? " Exactly. Hydrogen fuel cells are existed to improve & become cheaper quite quickly & are the only viable solution. We will all rush to battery cars only to find them superceded very quickly & valueless. There is no way if successful scrapping battery cars at end of life so they lie dumped unable to be recycled. It's a massive con. All our old stuff is scrapped now. Most of it is shipped out of the country on giant ships that bring in our new cars. They are simply exported to Asia & Africa & keep running while we pay thru the nose. The uk government won't pay out billions on charging points for them to fall out of use when hydrogen takes over. An electric coach with 50 passengers & luggage cannot climb the french alps. A weeks holiday on the south coast leaving from Manchester will turn into a 3 day epic trying to find vacant charging points & planning it all out. Nice idea in theory but it's all utter bollocks.

"At the moment I'm in Bangkok where the pollution is so bad,I'm coughing like a 50 per day smoker. The traffic is just unbelievable, and all of it petrol or diesel cars, motorbikes, buses, trucks and tuk tuks. This is not even the worst city in the world for pollution, that honor currently goes to New Delhi. Unless every country, every city, every driver in the world can be persuaded to go green, it seems unlikely to me that Britain going all electric, using only wind and wave power, will make the slightest bit of difference worldwide. Electric vehicles are not the panacea some seem to think they are. A step in the right direction, maybe but too little, too late. " ive been to delhi, worked there for a while, i agree the cars etc are a problem, but by far the worst offenders are industry, untill that changes, then sropping cars using fossal fuels is just a plaster on a severed leg
