Irrational fears. You got any?

I’m usually a confident, happy person but the thought of dentists makes my blood run cold. Need to have all four wisdom teeth removed and the idea is making my knees shake. No bad experiences in the past, totally irrational....

What’s yours if you have one?

Oh and if there are any dentists out there who are willing to help me get over this fear, please pm me

I suffer from misophonia, certain noises will give me a phobic reaction, sick, panicky, angry... Like an arachnoohobe confronted with a spider. People eating is the worst one for me. I live with a set of earphones in constant reach. I'd give anything in the world to be free of it

Some of my fears, I've partially recovered from with variations of exposure therapy. (What you really don't want to hear, you get over your fear by putting yourself in its path)

Others... no, actually, the fear is rational, risk still exists, and there's no way to eliminate the terror. And trying to process it might be traumatic. So tough luck, you've got to live with it

I have Misophonia too and it can be hard for other people to understand the intensity of feeling you can have from sounds that are innocuous to them. Certain noises make me want to rip the arms off the person making it or run away crying. I actually cried when I found out it was an recognised disorder and not just me over reaction as I’d been told countless times.

A lot of my big fears boil down to one thing.

Last year I confessed this to someone who turned around and said, airily, "well, that's in the past, you don't have to worry about it any more."

That thing happened that very night

"I don't know that it's a fear per se, but I feel paralysed when I try to talk to someone new."

I'm not quite that bad (and I'm not trying to belittle what you said) but I am nervous about approaching someone new, both in real life and on here. I never quite know what to say, as I don't have a great line in instigating small talk. So usually I say nothing.

Social shyness is probably a better term for what I have

I have one, my partner has three, all grown. The day will come when they're older and you can't be super dad and fix all their problems with hugs and sweets and toys. But then you move to the point where you form an adult relationship with your sons that involves mutual respect and support and love. You've got so much good stuff to come and you're going to crush it. His eldest is 6 ft 8 and gives the best hugs in the world

My partners got a shark phobia, I mean obviously being afraid of something that can kill you isn't irrational but he feels sick watching them on TV. Jaws affected us both, it gave me a life long love of and fascination with them. To dive with them is a dream for me and the idea of hell for him

Aww thank you Lola, hugs are always welcomed

Yes it’s a relief to realise that you’re not just a bitch. It’s good that you’re managing it - I always have earphones too x

Taking off, I do it so often but always think at about 50-100 feet that if a fuse blew or the engine stalled right now we’d be fucked.

The dentist thing isn’t irrational , wisdoms take some pulling the roots are huge, my dentist had to put his foot on my chest.

Large bodies of water. It's worse if I cant see what's in it. Even worse if I can see what's in it. Fish. Weird little aliens that they are! And Achilles tendons. That's the worst. Have to physically walk away from anyone walking in front of me with short pants and trainers with no socks on. Makes me want to cry!

Only time can heal how you feel at the moment. When you are an honest , trustworthy person you only see that in others until they prove you wrong.

You will get over this and come back a stronger version of you. Sending hugs .xx

I don't believe I have any irrational fears. Healthy fears for most of the usual things, which I think hark back to primitive times or are just commonsense survival instincts (some spiders can kill you and you might die falling from a great height, although it's more about the landing)

I'm not freaked out or fearful of anything weird like buttons or fish. The unknown I guessed, a very natural and human fear, but even the unknown can be known eventually. So I suppose that means fears can be conquered.... but I digress.....

No, OP the only time I experience irrational fears is when I'm not in a good place with my mental health.

Think it's quite a common one actually so we're not all that weird .

And Babs, I read it's to do with your brain associating images like that with disease and/or death so you instinctively want to get away from them fast, so I suppose it's not completely irrational then.

There's plenty of things I don't like & will avoid like slugs give me the book so does clearing up sick & I'm not a fan of being in deep waters, I'm OK on them in kayak or boat though.

The things I get panic attacks over are rational due to past.

I can't think of irrational ones other than I fear that my body will give up on me when I'm just getting my freedom from parenthood which has been my entire adult life.

I actually love fitting in small spaces, spiders heights I'm not keen on but can do it.

There's noises that just flick a switch like whistling though.
