A question for Americans.

Why are Crisps called potato chips? A Crisp can be made from other vegetables such as carrots or pasnips and so on.

Do they call carrot crisps "carrot chips then?"

Why are Chips called "Fries" or "French Fries"? How do they suddenly become French? Why not a "potato fry" like they say "potato chip?"

Most ridiculous thing I thought before moving here is that people in Scotland lived somewhat in the hills with grass roofs omg.. And I also thought I could drive/take a ferry here

It was something to do with pre WW2 houses. The cold feed was already in and the hot one came from the hot water tank or what it was. Guess it was easier and cheaper to use standard taps for both then replacing with mixer taps

I think it was because the hot water was heated from the fire with a back boiler. In the days before immersion tanks ( airing cupboard) and when people washed their hands they would have out the plug in and run a basin full .. so they didn't need a mixer tap.

It’s handy to have with kids about, warm enough for a bath etc but won’t get scolded. I don’t have a water tank and my water is heated as it comes through the pipe

I don't know, but the only machine I've heard of is in Tokyo which is a very expensive place. I would guess around £50/7000 yen?

Thats far too low, just in the right zone for legionella bacteria. It needs to be about 50C.

What are you lot on about? There’s two separate taps because there’s two separate pipes. Hot water comes from the boiler and is ore heated, where as the cold water comes from the mains and is pressurised differently.if you connect the pipes too early on, you create a flow of air through the mains and this causes depressurisation either in the local area or it backs up to the water facility. This pocket of air stops the motors from running currently and ends up over working them, causing them to short circuit and burst the other pipes connected. This then causes every pipe in the air to de-pressurise and none of the water can come from the mains and the only water available will be the water you have in your boiler at the time of incident. because the water can’t go into the boiler

There is actually a very sensible and logical reason behind this that I think has something to do with hot water storage tanks, though to give an accurate answer, I'd need to go and do a little research
