To all of those people who are struggling with mental health issues, with feeling hemmed in and trapped in your head. Those that are having a black dog day. I know exactly how you're feeling. Please remember, you don't have to struggle alone.

I have periods where I doubt my contribution to the world and my reason for existence. I know they say that you aren't alone and to talk to someone, the best way for me to turn things around is to lock myself away for a couple of days and get right with myself. It honestly doesnt work for me when I'm in that frame of mine to be with people. Thankfully it's not all that common these days that I think like this

Nicely put OP and well done for starting a conversation on it. Mental health is definitely something we should talk about more and encourage people to open up about. I'm my own worst enemy as I will happily help anyone that needs it but never open up myself.

Hope your okay xx

Struggling at the moment with my own mental health, it's something that affects me often. Sometimes I'm good with dealing it and other times I'm not. Unfortunately it's the later at the moment. But I kind of know it'll pass eventually just a matter of working through it. Thanks op needed to see that today

Everyone deals with it differently, some like to talk and some don’t. What is important is finding what works for you, reaching out if you need to or immersing yourself in an interest / hobbie that helps clear your mind.

I've been the lowest of low but have come out the other side.

What got me through was friends, not them bombarding me with messages all the time asking if I was ok, but me just knowing they were there for me if/when I needed them.

I reached out to one who drove from Leicester to see me. Who knows what would have happened if they didn't show up, I can only be forever grateful they did

Yeah, the worse sucks. I had a friend who I tried to talk to, begged to get help and I really, really did beg and then one day got a text from his brother in law to say he'd made his second suicide attempt and this one had been successful. However hard you tried and however many people tell you that he made his own choice there'll always be part of you wondering if you could have, should have done more. Sorry for your loss. You are definitely not the only one to experience this. I have a friend who I’ve been talking to for near on 20 years. He’s sought help many a time professional and reaching out to friends. Two days of the year are devoted to just being there and listening to him, talking to him as they are his lowest moments each year.

He tried to commit suicide for a second time in 10 months this January, thankfully he was found. However, we all missed the trigger and warning signs when we look back. It’s hard not to think could we have done more, but sometimes no matter what we do, they’ve sunk to that low and cannot see any other answers.

I knew I wouldn't be. After his first attempt, a giant overdose that would have killed most people he said to me "a real man would have cut his own throat". He did it with a tube from his exhaust in the end (sorry, sorry ) He'd obviously been offered help after the first one and didn't want it . I'll never forget him, he was a very unusual and very talented man.

Well said OP.

To anyone suffering, please talk to someone, it really does help. You are not alone, and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

If you can't bring yourself to talk about it, write it down in a letter, text or an email, and lwt someone read it.

Two little words 'help me' can make such a huge difference. Help is out there, and more and more people these days realise that it does exist, and that the words 'pull yourself together' don't help.

To anyone suffering right now, massive hugs, and go easy on yourself.

Sometimes just vocalising something can stop it hurting more than you could imagine. Just saying it out loud to someone neutralises it and it's still there but it doesn't seem so overpowering. My ex husband volunteers as a samaritan and not every caller is suicidal, people call about things that sound minor but have devastated them. And that's perfectly OK, that's what they're there for, to listen. Not to advise but just to let people articulate what's hurting them. I'm very proud of him for doing it.

Great thread, and of course everyone should be kind to themselves and others

However while we look from the perspective of the suffere how about we give a huge shout out to those behind who give that support 24/7.

I have been there and it is draining, you are invisible and have to have your own needs and feelings constantly put on hold whilst everyone is thinking about the sufferer, what about those standing behind 24/7.

We need to look for everyone, as everyone is a victim in some way shape or form ?

Me too. When suffering ptsd episodes I would literally need to lie on the earth and breathe. Counts of 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out until my parasympathetic nervous system took over. I have lay down in some strange places!

I sacked off nearly everything in my life and spent hours next to a river, hugging a rock or amongst trees.

I know lots of people can't access nature in the same way but it's a very good balance to the heady talking. Meditation, singing, anything that gives the body a chance to move things through as well as the mind.
