Insulting?

I told a friend that I fancied a fit, buff, very good looking guy but felt I was 'punching above my weight'. My friend said this is a derogatory term which insults people I have been out with and makes them second best. Anyone agree or disagree?

Of course they were second best, if they were first best you’d still be with them.
