The only women I call (merched) girls are my old school friends. To call each other women would mean we actually have to admit we're not 16 anymore. Something none of us want

I know grannies who still say they're "going out with the girls" I still say "few of the boys are going football, you coming?"

I can see why "girls" might be used as condescending or belittling, but the above contexts seem perfectly normal to me.

I have stopped saying "girls" on the forums tho.

It's a fair point, and I don't like being called a girl by anyone. However, when I use girls I mean my school mates. It's what our mam's call us and it's a habit a routine, when we're together we revert back to our teenage selves and it's blooming lovely

I haven't been a girl for 30 years - I'll tolerate it from friends in the context of girls' night out etc., but not anywhere else. I'm open and vocal about that.

I don't like "guys" in the context of a mixed sex group either - it re-enforces the idea of the masculine as the norm and erases women. I use folks instead.

There and to the left a bit

Like most things it's about context, how it's said, who's said it etc and comes with a huge dollop of personal choice too - as this thread has shown for some it's acceptable, for some it's acceptable in specific contexts and for others it's not - ultimately it comes down to the context and how demeaningly it is meant/used.

I certainly wouldn't use it intentionally in a demeaning way, and definitely not in an initial message here, but I might say something like "Good night out with the girls?" just as I would say "I'm having a night out with the boys"

"Dont think I would want to spank a naughty women "have you been a good women" sounds wrong ?

And spanking a naughty girl is ok ?

Sheesh

Oh yes I love to spank naughty girls.

Why do I feel like saying " your a bad, bad woman " is like something wrong

"

Age doesn't determine whether a female is a girl or a woman... I think attitude does. So what we call ourselves is often irrelevant

I don’t mind most words if said in the right context.

The one that grated on me though is ‘dear’. I’m not the start of a letter or indeed anyone’s dear

My mum is 86 and still talks about meeting up with the girls. They wee friends at school. I talk about going out with the lads too. It’s just colloquial. I don’t say it to offend.

However I always refer to the women on here as women, using neither girls nor ladies as I think that’s appropriate.
