What makes a better friend, someone who sticks up for you no matter what or someone who tells you when you're in the wrong and leaves you to it?

The first option. That involves loyalty.

The second option is really their opinion versus your own.

Its a blend of both.

A real friend would tell you youre making a mistake and stick around to catch you when you fall.

I'd say someone who sticks up for you, but also isn't afraid to call you out on stuff.

Sorry, that was more what I meant. Stick around but not fight your battles for you, just be there in the background.

Absolutely both but if they are a true friend they will know your looking out for them and give your valued opinion

But was I stepping out of line or was it just their opinion I was? And if they are just going to give me their opinion and run then they can keep it to themself.

Stick by me through the good and the bad. Don’t cut and run.

That’s what I think anyway.

Both. But a true friend would not just walk away and leave you to it.....

No matter how much they may disagree with you about something.

It's a bit of both in reality for me. If you think a friend is wrong then you should do all you can to stop them continuing to be so, BUT though you may not agree you still stand with them. If you abandon a friend just because they're wrong (unless it's something serious they've done obviously) then youre not really much of a friend.

I want friends who'll tell me what they consider to be best for me rather than what I want to hear. I don't want sycophants and hangers on but once they've told me I'm an idiot I expect them to provide me with an alibi.

That is exactly what you need to say to the nice policeman...after you've disposed of the evidence.

The first option. With the added extra of them feeling free and able to offer their perspective and STILL stick by me regardless of what I make of it.

I love you

I see this and think you should do that

Oh you dont and you won't

I still love you, maybe even a bit more

Is there a third option where you point out the issue but tell them not to worry about it because they're a mate?

Ah, that then. Nothing good about letting your mate be a dickhead and making the world a worser place.

A true friend is someone with whom you can share your life's up's, down's, troubles and good times, but who'll not be utterly judgemental whilst giving our their viewpoint and usually allowing you a balanced view.

I have 2 really close friends who fit that category. I've also been there for them over the past 30 years.

There are times for each. The best type of friend is one who knows when to do which and acts accordingly.

Absolutely this

And those people who whinge about having no friends...maybe have a look at how good a friend you've been in the past.

Being a friend is about being there for the good times and the bad, not just whinging and turning up when you need support

Totally agree, you can't force friends not to make mistakes, you can only advise them and be ready to be there when it inevitably goes wrong, it's also not saying 'I told you so'.

Amen to that! Amazing how many times a really good friend gets used as a sponge, then has no support from those they looked out for when they need it!

Drains and Radiators -

Drains - Those who look to YOU for support, who whinge incessantly and pontificate abound! but are rarely there when you need it and often YOU have to maintain contact with.

Radiators - those warm, comforting friends with whom you have a ‘two way valve’ there for you whatever the circumstance, celebrate your good times, pick you up when you’re down. Those who you hug often and welcome into your life because it’s two way

In the real world I’d ask if I heard gossip though ... but on here if I hear gossip I’ll just go.
