Donates the prize money from her recent ASB Classic tournament win in Auckland (her first win in three years) to Australia's fire relief fund.

A true champion.

A famous golfer won a tournament years back and donated the winnings to a charity.. everyone clapping.

Then it was revealed that it was a tax offset..

Does it really matter if the charity is benefiting?

I don't understand the tax offset thing you keep referring to Tom. The charity still gets all the money.

Why did Serena make her donation public ? If she was truly benevolent she would keep it private.

It sets a good example to other people so maybe others would donate if they are fans etc

The point is that the sportsperson company would lose the entire donation to tax. Yes the charity has all the money but in real terms the company either gives it to charity or to tax.

If there was a way to legally give all my tax to charities I certainly would.

I don't have a problem with people doing that.

If you donate to charity shops you can opt into gift aid where any profit they make from your items they can claim the same amount out of the tax you've paid.

Its honestly the best thing isn't it?

I hate the thought of all my tax going into 'the mans' pocket!

Well she may have been getting in the zone so to speak. She was horrible about a former player ranked No1 and resented it with a horrible interview..

And both Fed and Rafa donated large sums to the same charity

I expressed that badly. She was criticising the ranking system and not the player..

I wouldn't announce it no, but I think when it is someone well known like this it may encourage others to donate, be that well known people or us lot.

For me it is better than singers/ actors etc doing the likes of Red nose day to promote their new CD/ show/ book etc and the rest of us doing the donating
